I'm Andrea Volbrecht, a photo editor at Marie Claire. Today, we are working on a photo shoot called what men think about fashion.

We've got 3 great couples. All the women are in fashion and the men in their lives are not in fashion at all. So, I just wanted to see what their opinions are on basically the season's next trends that we'll all hopefully be adopting and wearing.

I'm a New York City firefighter and my girlfriend's Bridget Hall. I'm a very lucky, lucky guy.

I get to bring my boyfriend to work, you know, which I never get to do. So, he actually gets to see what I do and, you know, to kinda see what goes on behind the scenes, and what I have to put up with, and you know. Sometimes, I find myself changing outfits because my husband prefers something else rather than what I'm wearing, so...

There's this interesting dissonance between what women want to wear, what men want them to wear, and the sort of compromised territory in between, and that's what we were really after.

It's kind of mixed how the guys think in the firehouse about fashion. You got guys, the younger guys, who have a sense of style, and then you have, you know, the senior guys who are just kinda like settled in their way and they're old school.

And each couple will be shot together with the man. They're checking out what this woman is wearing.

Wow! [unknown].

Ah, baby!

You're like-- you look like "Grease", like hot "Grease", like, what's the-- what girl?

Sandy.

Sandy! You look like a hot Sandy from "Grease" high fashion style, high fashion Sandy.

We wanted the shoot to be playful. We wanted there to be some sort of connection happening between the man and the woman, but you could sort of tell if the man was checking out what she's wearing.

With the hair, what we wanna do is really compliment and take what the models would normally do, making it a bit more polished than perhaps what they would normally do in real life, and just kind of really show off their natural beauty and-- and just seeing fashion sense.

So I gave the photographer that we've worked with many times for studio fashion shoots and we really love his style. So, he's perfect fit for the story.

That guy should be very secure and, therefore, he can be self-deprecating and both of these guys were today.

Is this about, basically, am I dressing for fashion? Am I dressing for the office, the women there, or am I dressing for the men because the two are very, very different?

Will we-- will we be tempted to if we saw a beautiful girl walking by the firehouse? No 'cause we're professionals. But we would definitely smile. There would be a nice, big, warm smile.

Today, we went down to the Time Warner Center and we asked men and women what they thought men thought about women's fashion. So, I'm just gonna throw some things out there and sort of see your reaction. What do you think about really voluminous tent dresses?

I think they're awful. If I wanna see a tent dress, like, I'll-- I'll go camping.

Woah!

Even now, men have quite a stereotypical view of-- of they want women to dress, and it includes high heels.

I love-- I'm always a high-heel guy.

It includes really figure-hugging outfits, you know, the sort of sexy secretary look.

Naughty librarian thing.

I like contours and body shape, and-- and that's kinda why, you know, why the high heels come in.

I-- I have to confess. I think high heels are attractive, but...

You think of the incredible revolution in flat shoes. Everybody has a pair of flats. Now, the Lanvin flats, big waiting list for them.

There is something attractive about a woman that can feel comfortable in flats because it's a little bit more low maintenance.

I think that if I ever see a woman wearing flats and she can look comfortable, that's just as attractive.

Effortless was a-- a word that a lot of the men use to describe what they think is sexy in a woman.

I guess jeans and a t-shirt.

Really?

Yeah.

Interesting. Why is that?

Just more simple. I think, you know, they don't-- they're not trying too hard.

Is there something that she wears that you think is like the most awesome thing?

I like it when she wears one of my shirts.

I think my most, like, simple, plain, boring Abercrombie, like, v-neck they'll love because they, like, reveal something--

Oh!

or it fits well, or like--

A girl next door has that girl next door--

Right.

Right, yeah, totally.

My favorite, like, eclectic outfit that I spent $400 on and got in Europe, like, they couldn't care less about it.

I think there's always a tussle between are you dressing for other women, are you dressing to be approved by other women, are you dressing so men find you attractive, and where is your-- where is your safety ground, where is your comfort zone, what do you want to wear so that you can be attracted to-- to both.

Are there any things that Kay wears that you just totally love?

Love you said?

Yeah, love.

Yeah.

Okay, like what?

The stuff I bought.

Oh, excuse me!

Oh, there are only a couple of them.

Does he go shopping for you?

I think [unknown].

Yeah, I do.

Oh!

He does.

I go shopping with.

Oh!

Hello. Come on in, guys, to my small apartment. I'm gonna run this over the copy chief and then just go through e-mails and check my voicemail. I try to usually get to them when they come in on my BlackBerry and answer right away. Hi, Lauren!

Yeah. Nice to meet you.

Hi!

Having a good day?

Yeah.

This Is A Developing Story
