"Fat Talk" Free Week

"Fat Talk" Free Week

This month, our article "The Hunger Diaries" tapped into the complex relationship between women and food. But what about the equally complex relationship between women and their bodies? Recent studies found that, among other things, more than two-thirds of women between 18 and 25 would rather be mean or stupid than be fat, and more than 50 percent of women in that age group would rather be hit by a truck than be fat. (Ladies. Come on. Being a mean, dumb, dead person is so not cute.)

One group has decided to fight back against the body-image BS — the Delta Delta Delta Women's Fraternity is working with Reflections Body Image Program to cut out "fat talk" this week, the third annual Fat Talk Free Week.

What do they mean by "fat talk?" It's everything from "Does this make me look fat?" to "She looks so much better since she lost 10 pounds!" We all do it (admit it!), and Tri-Delt is probably right: It's hard to believe that thinking that way could possibly be good for us.

Tell Marie Claire: What do you think? Could you go a week without engaging in "fat talk?" Do you agree that thoughts and statements like these can wreak havoc on women's self esteem? Share your thoughts in the Comments section below.
