Maya Lin's Monumental Work
Artist Maya Lin, best known for her controversial 1981 Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., has set her sights on the environment. A new installment of her ongoing Confluence Project, large earthworks throughout Washington state, will be unveiled next month, just as Wave Field opens at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY. And soon What Is Missing?, an ambitious, Web-based multimedia "memorial" to what we've lost of planet Earth, will launch in Times Square. "I'm trying to make people look at the planet with fresh eyes," says 49-year-old Lin. "We didn't get to this point by people acting en masse but as individuals, which makes me think we'll get back on track that way." Visit mayalin.com.
