Rihanna's Met Gala beauty look was a bold reminder that blush can do very cool things to the face in drop-dead-gorgeous fashion. But these days—with no-makeup makeup and an extreme Instagram highlight on either end of the trend spectrum—blush can, sadly, get lost in the mix. That's why we're fully here for an unorthodox new look gaining traction: Yellow blush.
While rouge traditionally falls in the red, pink, or taupe color family, a handful of makeup artists and beauty vloggers are bucking tradition with flaxen shades of pigment. Using the "draping" technique—which consists of brushing the blush or shadow onto the natural bone structure to drape/manipulate the shape of the face—they create yellow-flushed looks that are equal parts pretty and alien. In fact, many of the designs are reminiscent of the blush application makeup artist Lora Arellano gave RiRi, which contoured along the eyes, temples, and lower cheekbones.

To our knowledge, there isn't a yellow-hued blush on the market right now,but vloggers like Stella Julian are using primrose eyeshadows such as the Sugarpill Burning Hearts Palette's "Buttercup" instead. And as is the case with yellow lip color, you can use the sunny pigment to customize more traditional blush colors for a more pared-back golden effect. Check out more interpretations of the trend below:
