How many times have you felt completely hopeless in Sephora trying to sift through thousands of beauty brands to find the perfect night cream? Too bad you can't take home a few samples to test before you decide which to buy. Enter Birchbox. The personalized subscription service that mails you a box of beauty products to try each month. Love what you try? Purchase it from the site's online shop.
Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna came up with the idea for Birchbox while studying at Harvard Business School. Running a startup isn't easy — late nights, cold calls, and plenty of skeptics — but their mission to weed through the beauty clutter for you drives them forward. This summer, Birchbox is opening its first permanent retail store in Manhattan (433 West Broadway). Inside, customers can build their own Birchbox with samples of their choice for $15. Makeup tutorials and styling classes will also be offered on site.
If you're a die-hard beauty addict, the 20 percent employee discount and $200 a year to buy anything from the shop may be enough to lure you toapply for a job. If not, this fun video introducing the team may do the trick. We spoke to Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Birchbox, Katia Beauchamp, on how to land a coveted job with the discovery commerce brand. Here are her five tips:
Be a Vision-ista
As a startup, we don't have a playbook or role model to look to when we come up with ideas for Birchbox. It's an exciting, stressful, all encompassing job and you need to be thinking about your work when you are in and out of the office. Our employees all come to work each day with a new vision to share with the team.
Make Decisions, Fast
You can't wait for all of the answers to unfold here. We need our employees to be bold, but humble and ready to course correct when they see something is not working. If you thrive on hard questions and problem solving quickly and effectively, this is the place for you.
Aspire to Be a YouTube Star
Birchbox has a YouTube channel where they publish sneak peaks of the upcoming boxes, makeup tutorials, hair tutorials, and lifestyle videos each month. Join the social media team and you'll go viral in no time.
Watch the Red Carpet
Birchbox runs both a women and men's magazine with monthly product recommendations, tips, and trend pieces. Keep tabs on celebrity hair trends and beauty secrets. If everyone on the runway is rocking a particular braid, Birchbox will show its customers how to follow the trend. Go into your interview knowing what's in and you'll be sure to stand out.
International Traveler? We Want You!
We're expanding overseas so if you're a EU citizen or have a working visa to be in Paris, London, or Barcelona, we would love to talk to you.
