Cute, furry creatures can cause people to act with a little impulsivity—sometimes to the dismay of the people who choose to live with them. So how would the oh-so-understanding men in these women's lives react when they told them (surprise!) that they adopted a dog?
From happy to mad to skeptical to sad, the consensus was pretty clear: Don't leave your partner out of the loop when it comes to a decision this
Samantha and Gabe have been together for 5 years.
"We've been talking about getting a dog eventually, so I knew this would be pretty convincing, but we are nowhere near ready," Samantha says. "We live in a one-bedroom apartment and we already have two cats, so we have no room for a dog. Clearly, he was not happy."
Caitlin and John have been married for 4 months.
"The dog we were fostering was recently adopted, so I thought I could convince him I adopted one to cheer us up!" Caitlin say. "I was really hoping he would have a stronger reaction, but he is so darn levelheaded all of the time (one of my favorite qualities about him), so he didn't panic. When he got home that evening, the first thing he said was, 'You really got another dog without telling me?' I went along with it—we even talked about potential names!—before I told him the truth. His reaction? 'Thank goodness.'"
Shawna and David have been married for 2 years.
"I knew the only way I was going to make this convincing was if I really committed to the joke," Shawna says. "I borrowed a dog from a friend to take pictures with, and I even announced that I adopted another dog (we already have one named Ossie) on Facebook. When I got home, David was sitting in the dark watching a war documentary. That's a signal he had been stewing about this. He was relieved when I told him it was a joke, and then he actually said, 'I'm kind of bummed we're not getting another dog tomorrow, though.'"
Lindsay and Dan have been together for 8 years.
"These pups happened to show up at my office that day, so I thought it was the perfect excuse to try this prank on Dan," says Caitlin. "As soon as I texted him, he called, but I used being at work as an excuse to not answer and keep texting. We want to breed our lab, so more dogs are something we want eventually—just not this way. Of course, I would never bring a dog home without discussing it with him first, and I thought for sure he would know that, but his reaction proved differently! I feel slightly bad, but I did get a good laugh."
Abby and Anthony have been together for 6 years.
"I knew he would be excited about me adopting another dog," says Abby. "We already have one dog Archer and a cat named Randi, but since we live in an apartment (with other people, no less), we were waiting to add to our furry family. I think he started to realize it was a joke when he noticed the car in the picture wasn't ours, but I tried to keep the act going until he got home and, of course, saw there was no dog. He was super bummed out. I guess I'll have to get him a dog as a present for our wedding next year!"
Courtney and Joe have been together for 2 years.
"My son and fiancé always talk about getting a dog, and last week, Joe showed me a picture of a baby Boston terrier—the kind of dog he's always wanted," says Courtney. We had already decided to wait until our 15-year-old cat passes away (the previous owner said he's not good with other animals) before getting a dog, so I was surprised Joe thought I was telling the truth. I couldn't keep the prank going because he got so excited and I felt terrible! When I got home, I told him there was no puppy and we had a conversation that we should wait until after our wedding in September to adopt."
Alyssa and Nate have been together for 7 years.
"My fiancé Nate is super laid-back but can be really stubborn and usually sticks to his guns," says Alyssa. "I keep telling him our dog Remmy needs a friend and I've been begging him for a second dog for more than a year. Nate is a huge animal guy, but right now is just not the right time. I thought he was going to be super mad, but he was okay with it!"
Samantha and Kurt have been married for 1 month.
"We just talked about getting a dog this weekend (I was trying to prep him for this prank!), but since we've only been married a month, are in the middle of a house remodel, and already have cats, he said now was not the best time," says Samantha. "I figured the prank could go either way. Needless to say, he called me on it right away!"
