I Wear a Lot of Vintage Fashion—3 Styling Tricks I Won't Gatekeep

How does one style vintage in a world that feels so different, especially when it comes to fashion?

It’s easy to understand why vintage fashion is so adored and forever sought-after. There’s something almost addictive about the hunt—the thrill in spending hours, days, even weeks combing through the same five consignment sites, over and over again, hopping to find the archival gem of your dreams, the one that makes fashion lovers stop in their tracks, leaving heartbroken when you tell them, “Oh, this? It’s vintage, Prada Spring/Summer 1998.”

Thanks to my grandmother, I was spared much of the online chaos. I inherited her entire designer vintage collection. But as you know, when one challenge fades, another emerges: How does one style vintage pieces in a world that feels so different, especially when it comes to fashion?

Through trial and error, I've developed three simple rules for how to style vintage.

Balance

This is especially important whenever I feel inspired to wear one of my grandmother’s lavish statement coats, like this Bob Mackie Sequin Casino Jacket. I'll wear it over a more relaxed outfit—which is different to how my grandmother would wear it. That’s the beauty of personal style: Two people can have the exact same piece of clothing but style it differently, changing the feel, style and look of the piece completely.

My go-to uniform is a pair of straight-leg jeans and a crisp white T-shirt. Lately, I’ve been completely obsessed with pairing the look with classic loafers. I like the juxtaposition of an elevated jacket with a more relaxed jeans-and-a-tee pairing.

Get It Tailored

Clothes are meant to be worn, not tucked away, never to see the light of day. I understand the daunting feeling of relinquishing a beloved garment to someone else, but the reward far outweighs the fear.

When you tailor a vintage piece, you’re not just preserving it—you’re giving it a whole new life. Getting my grandmother’s vintage Chanel trousers tailored not only gave them a second wind, it allowed me to find new and refreshing ways to style them, whether it be with a white high-neck tank, an oversized Oxford shirt, and a pair of leather sneakers or with a dark grey turtleneck, off-white quarter-zip, and a burgundy patent leather heel. The possibilities now are endless—it’s up to you to explore and try new things.

Have Fun

Honestly, this might be the most important rule. Clothing is a powerful way to express yourself. It allows you to reveal personality traits, be creative, and communicate values without words. Buying vintage is a way to break out of whatever trend cycle we're currently in and express ourselves unique way.

One of my favorite vintage pieces that I feel like best incapsulates me is my grandmother’s vintage cigar box bag. Not only do I feel connected to her whenever I wear it, it also doubles as a conversation-starter. It's a unique piece, and it has a story, giving me the opportunity to talk about my grandmother.
