I tend to get into a rut when creating summer outfits. I always end up in basics like denim cut-offs and white T-shirts—but this summer, I want more elevated options. So, as we go into the new season, I’m using the Memorial Day sales at Banana Republic, Gap, and Sam Edelman to prepare my wardrobe.

Gap's sale runs from May 22 through to May 28; shoppers can take between 40 and 60 percent off of summer styles and deals. An extra 50 percent off can be taken off all tees, tank tops, summer dresses, and shorts, plus an extra 60 percent off already-on-sale items. At Sam Edelman, you can take an extra 25 percent off already on-sale styles with the code "SUMMERFUN" from May 24 through to May 27. Finally, Banana Republic's sale will run from May 23 until May 27 and will give shoppers a 30 percent discount sitewide.

Use the outfits on this list as a template this season. Some work perfectly as a summer work outfit (like a summer dress with flats), while others are great for a summer date night or a day running errands. Plus, everything on this list—from the linen dresses to the strappy sandals—is made to be worn for hours on even the hottest of days.

Keeping it Bright

A bright dress is made all the more wearable when worn with strappy sandals. Your chosen color is up to you, but make sure it highlights your summer tan.

Even if you don't wear color, simple accessories make a brighter-hued dress easier to style.

Fresh and Clean

Hear me out—wearing all white is a super sleek way to get through the summer. White jeans, in particular, have a forever lifespan in my own closet, and I rely on other basics (like a white button-down shirt) to get the most wear out of them. Fresh white sneakers or heels complete the look.

Summer Casual

White shorts might seem daunting, but pairing them with an oversized button-down and matching white flats or mules transforms them into an outfit perfect for the office or a day date.

Be The Vest

Vests are fashion's favorite summer piece. You can go for one that's cropped or choose a longline option for the office.

Slip Into It

If you're prone to wearing all black (even in the summer!), try a black slip dress with a trendy pair of mesh flats.

Red Hot

Summer is the perfect time to wear brighter colors like red, and choosing a sweet mini-dress silhouette makes the color feel approachable. Mary Jane-style ballet flats only make it easier to wear.
