Thousands of Donald Trump supporters stormed the nation’s Capitol Building on Wednesday, disrupting a joint session of Congress to falsely assert the election was stolen from the president. The rally quickly dissolved into what has been described as a “violent” and “chaotic” riot with throngs of people pushing past law enforcement and entering the building. Members of Congress are now sheltering in place at Capitol Hill, providing updates about their safety and the state of the country via social media. Here’s what congresswomen are saying about the lockdown.
Rep. Cori Bush, Missouri
My team and I are safe. I am in disbelief. I can’t believe domestic terrorists are roaming around inside the Capitol.I’m remembering being brutalized and treated like a domestic terrorist just for protesting to keep my people alive.St. Louis: you’re in my heart right now.January 6, 2021
Rep. Haley Stevens, Michigan
I’m sheltering in place in my office. The building next door has been evacuated. I can’t believe I have to write this.January 6, 2021
Rep. Elaine Luria, Virginia
I just had to evacuate my office because of a pipe bomb reported outside. Supporters of the President are trying to force their way into the Capitol and I can hear what sounds like multiple gunshots. (1/2)January 6, 2021
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Michigan
My team and I are safe. We are extremely dismayed and disturbed by what is currently happening at the Capitol.January 6, 2021
This is on Donald Trump, period. He called folks to D.C. and gave them marching orders. He needs to be impeached and removed immediately.January 6, 2021
Rep. Elissa Slotkin, Michigan
Violence has absolutely no place in our politics. I implore protesters to remain peaceful in exercising their first amendment rights, and I urge my colleagues to recognize where their actions have led us.January 6, 2021
This is a tough moment for everyone. The National Guard and law enforcement will need to clear the Capitol.I urge all protestors, some being from my own district, to disperse.January 6, 2021
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Washington
I can't contain my rage at Donald Trump and Republicans who invited, incited, and fueled this terror. Our country and our democracy will have to recover from these deep wounds—and it won't be easy. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and thoughts for our safety and for America.January 6, 2021

An attack on the orderly functioning of our government is inexcusable. This is absolutely ridiculous. pic.twitter.com/7fJTXxvcmVJanuary 6, 2021

Please read the following statement from my office on the events unfolding at the Capitol today: pic.twitter.com/PtLK588PgSJanuary 6, 2021
Rep. Nancy Mace, South Carolina
This is un-American. Mr. President, please do something. Keep America safe. Enough. Support our police. This isn’t a protest. It’s anarchy.I thought we were the party of law & order.January 6, 2021
Just evacuated my office in Cannon due to a nearby threat. Now we’re seeing protesters assaulting Capitol Police. This is wrong. This is not who we are. I’m heartbroken for our nation today. pic.twitter.com/jC9P0YfSLQJanuary 6, 2021

Rep. Terri Sewell, Alabama
I am sheltering in a safe location and praying for the safety of our nation, members of Congress, congressional staff, law enforcement, and Capitol Hill residents.January 6, 2021
There has been a breach of the Capitol building. We are locked inside the House chamber until Capitol Police allows us to leave. Praying that this chaos dissipates and no one gets hurt 🙏🏾January 6, 2021
Rep. Marilyn Strickland, Washington
The Capitol has been breached. Both chambers have been evacuated. This is not peaceful protest, this is domestic terrorism. This violence is direct result of Trump undermining our democratic process simply because he didn't like the results. Shameful and completely reckless. https://t.co/X6F181i2shJanuary 6, 2021
Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland to @GStephanopoulos: "First and foremost George, the election of Joe Biden is legitimate...it is a tragic day in the United States of America when our democracy is being undermined by a president who just doesn't know when it's time to go." pic.twitter.com/z9yp7ijc7hJanuary 6, 2021
Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota
I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment. Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.January 6, 2021
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Illinois
I have spent my entire adult life defending our Constitution and people’s rights to peacefully demonstrate. I never thought I’d need to defend democracy from an attempted, violent overthrow in our own nation’s Capitol. I will not yield to those who seek to harm our democracy.January 6, 2021
As Donald Trump continues to lie about attacks on our democracy and fan the flames of debunked conspiracy theories, his supporters carrying Confederate flags are literally breaking into the U.S. Capitol to prevent elected representatives from casting their votes. https://t.co/wHzPajnddTJanuary 6, 2021
