Big Girl in a Skinny World: Girls' Night Out

Hello Ladies:
This week Jennifer from Raleigh, North Carolina says:

You are so inspiring. What else are some great ideas for us plus size women to wear, especially for going out? I’m also a size 18.

A girl’s night out can bring instantly bring a smile—and a frown—to any plus size girls. Going out attire that just doesn’t fit is probably the single biggest culprit behind most of the muffled crying you hear in fitting rooms at any given moment. Things to remember: a) You are not alone, b) stop comparing your body to those of your friends, it won’t do you any favors, and c) it is absolutely possible to find an outfit!

For a dinner and a movie with the girls, try a blazer, t-shirt and a great pair of shorts. I know shorts are a big ordeal for bigger girls, but I just recently picked up a pair of brown tweed wool shorts at Gap. They are a great fit and the perfect length. If the occasion calls for a dressier option, I would suggest a flirty dress. Calvin Klein has a great black frock with a chain detail that will see you through those dressy (but not so dressy) occasions. Finally there is the dreaded cocktail dress. It’s the dress that matters most because it must see you through some of the most important functions of your life—weddings, parties and work events. Instinct might tell you to buy a basic black dress, which isn’t entirely wrong. Every girl needs a great black dress. But I say add some color to your wardrobe; try Avenue’s shawl collar draped dress in red or purple. It’s sure to flatter and brighten up your closet. Hope that helps! Let me know how your shopping goes!!!
