Presenting: The 10 Best Pistachio Perfumes, According to Scent Experts
The season's most indulgent fragrance trend is surprisingly delicious.
I wouldn't call pistachios an under-appreciated nut, but if you take a little time to think about them, you'll realize they're so much more than a protein-packed snack. They're creamy, showcase a gorgeous color, and work just as well in gelato as they do on a summer salad. Or, perhaps, in a perfume?
The latter is something that's getting a ton of buzz in the beauty space—and for good reason. Richard Saint-Ford, founder and creative director of Iggywoo, thinks that the popularity of pistachio fragrance is at the center of a much bigger shift in the olfactory world. "For the past few years, we've been surrounded by very obvious dessert-style gourmands; frosting, caramel, brown sugar, sweetness for the sake of sweetness," he explains. "Pistachio offers something different. It still feels comforting and indulgent, but it has a natural savory warmth and texture that makes it feel far more sophisticated."
Keep reading to discover 10 of the most exciting pistachio fragrances on the market, from straight-up pistachio concoctions to easy breezy body sprays and a surprising note or two (if you want to really go nuts).
Pistachio Perfection
While pistachio has made its way into plenty of scents in a supporting role, I want to start this list off with a few options that really let the note shine. "Pistachio has appeared in perfumery before, but it was never really treated as a hero ingredient in the way vanilla, rose, or oud have been. Historically, it's been used much more as a supporting note or folded into gourmand compositions rather than given its own identity," Saint-Ford says. The following perfumes—including one made by the expert himself—have pistachio as the star.
Sophia Vilensky poses with her bottle of D.S. & Durga Pistachio Eau de Parfum.
D.S. & Durga is known for its storytelling, but they kept things simple with this one. The "story" on the side of the box reads "it's just pistachio." Originally released in a limited run of 100 bottles, the world went completely wild (nuts!) for this scent—which features a top note of pistachio, a heart of more pistachio, and a base with even more pistachio—that the brand made it official.
Saint-Ford says Iggywoo's Pistachio Voodoo Child represents exactly what he thinks pistachio can become. "When I created it, I deliberately wanted to move away from the obvious pistachio trend. I wanted the nuttiness to lead, supported by florals, woods—something playful, slightly rebellious and much more grown-up," he explains. "That's what Iggywoo does best. We take familiar ingredients and gently twist them out of reality, allowing people to experience them in a completely different way."
Transportive Pistachio Scents
We're well aware that fragrance can transport us somewhere far, far away. These are the pistachio fragrances that'll mentally transport you, whether you choose to travel to the tropics or to an Italian gelato shop, is up to you.
As the name suggests, Granado took a tropical turn here, pairing their creamy pistachio note with bright mandarin, earthy carrot accord, iris, and warm amber woods. Housed in such a pretty bottle, this scent is super fresh at its opening and "embodies maximalism and elegance in perfect harmony," according to the brand.
KAYALI’s Yum Pistachio Gelato was inspired by a 2014 trip to Rome that founder Mona Kattan took. While traipsing through the ancient city with her sister, she discovered pistachio gelato. We now have this delicious scent with notes of pistachio gelato, cotton candy, and whipped cream.
She's Nuts, But She's Sweet
As Saint-Ford says, pistachio has an incredible texture and can "smell creamy without feeling milky, nutty without becoming dry, and naturally warm without relying on sugar." If you do feel like turning up the sweetness, though? There are some great ways to do it—starting with these two scents.
Borntostandout's brilliantly named NUTS offers you every excuse to get a little wacky, because "sometimes the best things in life are a little over the top." At its opening, you'll find pistachio, almond, caramel, rum, and honey. Heart notes include vanilla, sesame, and davana essence, and base notes are tonka absolute, tobacco, Gaïac wood, ambergris, and white musks.
"Gourmand" is in the name when it comes to Le Monde Gourmand, and their (super affordable) offerings always deliver. This was their first: an edible, nutty vanilla-and-amber fragrance featuring a top note of milky vanilla mousse, a middle note of pistachio, and a base of vanilla bean.
A Body Spray Moment
Nuts famously offer a great amount of protein at a reasonable price. These body mists strive to offer the same. Ringing up at a much lower price point than other options on this list, these body mists deliver the same nutty flavor and can be used on both hair and body.
Sophia Vilensky holds her bottle of Mugler Starlicious Pistachio Praline.
Formulated with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and panthenol to help you feel hydrated, refreshed, and smooth wherever you choose to spritz it, this hair and body mist by Touchland is travel-friendly and features key notes of warm cardamom, crushed pistachio, and oak wood. Now, can they just make this scent into a hand sanitizer?
Oh, Mugler. Even when we're not talking about Angel Eau de Parfum, your scents have a way of making me feel mighty angelic. The new Starlicious Pistachio Praline mist was "crafted to help you feel luxurious," blending the nuttiness of pistachio with caramel and patchouli for a scent that feels luxurious and feminine.
Not Your Regular Pistachio
According to Saint-Ford, one of the biggest challenges in the pistachio fragrance realm is that many treat the note as just another excuse to add sugar and milk. "What we're seeing now feels like the first real wave where pistachio is becoming the headline ingredient," he explains. "The risk, though, which I see happening, is that it can quickly become formulaic if every interpretation follows the same sugary, creamy blueprint." That's not happening here.
OK, there is a milk situation going on here. But it's a candied floral rose milk. That's different enough for me. After the opening notes of rose milk and pistachio, this scent twists into a place of velvety patchouli, aromatic oud, and amber resin. "What could be more lovely and twisted than impossibility?" asks the brand. Nothing, I suppose.
Described as "a stable scent for a wild horse," this equine-capped bottle houses a fragrance of spice, leather, violet leaf, cardamom, and salty pistachio. A little unexpected but extremely wearable, it's a fun one to pull out in the cooler months—or really whenever you feel like taking the reigns.
