Kristen Stewart has spent most of 2021 filming Pablo Larraín’s Spencer in Europe, and production is reaching its final stretch. In honor of filming moving to the U.K., a new official still of Stewart as Princess Diana was released. This time, Stewart appears unobscured in front of the camera, with a replica of Diana's sapphire engagement ring that Charles gave her (which Kate Middleton now wears) visible on her ring finger.
Spencer explores the late Princess of Wales’ last Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham in 1991 before she decided to divorce Charles. Images have come out from paparazzi of Stewart as Diana dressed in street wear and on the stand-in Sandringham grounds in a robe coat. Spencer has been fliming at Schloss Nordkirchen palace near Dortmund in Germany for most of the winter.
Stewart spoke to InStyle in October 2020 about preparing to play Diana ahead of film production. “We don't start shooting until mid-January,” she said. “The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice, and it's so, so distinct and particular. I'm working on it now and already have my dialect coach. In terms of research, I've gotten through two and a half biographies, and I'm finishing all the material before I actually go make the movie. It's one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don't want to just play Diana—I want to know her implicitly. I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long.”
