As I write this, temperatures in New York City have sharply fallen into the low 60s. So, to get ready for autumn, I’ll be rewatching Season 1, Episode 7 of Gilmore Girls (IYKYK), lighting countless pumpkin spice-scented candles, and of course, dusting off my fall jackets that have been tucked away in the back of my closet.

Although my wardrobe is already overflowing, I firmly believe you can never have too many lightweight layers. Because of this, I’m updating my fall outerwear collection. I’ve focused on classic essentials—like tailored trench coats and sleek leather jackets—that layer nicely over knit cardigans and sweater dresses. I’m also stocking up on the season’s top trends, such as suede jackets, which appeared on the Fall 2025 runways of Miu Miu, Coach, and Hermès.

Keep scrolling for a handpicked list of 21 fall jackets that top my wish list. These pieces are effortlessly stylish, but more than anything, they’re truly timeless. With lasting appeal, you can expect these styles to stay relevant throughout this season and many more to come.

Suede Jackets

Stitched with luxurious suede, these layers appear undeniably rich. Choose classic shades like Cognac or try the trending chocolate brown color. Pair these pieces with cowboy boots and flared jeans for a Western-inspired look.

Barn Jackets

I can trace the barn jacket’s recent revival back to the Spring 2024 Fashion Week circuit, when Prada showcased a designer version that instantly became a hit. Since then, the utilitarian look has appeared in many luxury and affordable collections, and it’s here to stay.

Embrace an edgy vibe with a shiny leather jacket. Flowy bomber jackets and high-neck moto styles are great for casual outings, while sleek blazers fit for more formal events.

Trench Coats

For a dynamic feel, cinch your trench coat at the waist and roll up the sleeves.

Don’t let the name fool you—a trench coat can definitely be considered a type of jacket. For transitional weather, try a cropped version. When autumn temperatures start to dip, choose a knee-length style that keeps you warm.

Denim Jackets

Just like a sturdy pair of jeans, a denim jacket is a dependable wardrobe essential that will always stay fashionable. From light wash options to deep indigo styles, the choices are endless.

Quilted Jackets

Though it’s not quite time to grab your puffer coat, many cool fall days are still to come. So, get ready with a quilted jacket that provides enough coverage without making you overheat.

Lady Jackets

Create a more polished look by replacing your soft cardigan with a boxy lady jacket. Choose a neutral color or make a statement with plaid patterns and bright colors.
