Where'd You Go, Bernadette By Maria Semple

A TV show in a book: Author Semple has written for on-screen hits like Arrested Development and Mad About You, and nails this quirky and smart family comedy. Plot notes: Days before a family trip to Antarctica, Bernadette goes missing. Her daughter, playing detective, weaves together an unpredictable but totally plausible story using e-mails, receipts, letters from school, and more. The innovative format lends itself to a fast-paced read. LYAO: You'll want to hang out with the book's middle-aged protagonist, Bernadette — her wry observations about PTA moms, Seattle's homeless, and Bucca di Beppo are hilarious. If only she weren't afraid of other human beings.
