Recession-Friendly Hair Treatments

I like to think of deep oil treatments as gifts for my hair: I seldom have enough time to spare for deep conditioning, so when I do, it feels like a special occasion. I've been feeling the need to treat myself a little more often recently, now that I've been feeling the flaking and itchy sensation compliments of the harsh cold weather. I've been running to my closet for Jonathan Products IB Reviatalizer Overnight Oil Treatment Spray ($44). It not only has a pleasant smell, the spray application saves you from a greasy mess, and it lasts a long time even if it's only a semi-monthly ritual.

But now that the economy has gone for a nosedive, I have been trying to trim on some of my beauty expenditures, trading brands for DIY concoctions in the kitchen. To imitate the results you can get from Jonathan's oil, my tried and true go-to is warm olive oil. Just pour a couple tablespoons in a bowl and microwave it for 45 seconds. Then massage it in your hair, concentrating on roots and ends. Make sure you don't put too much (it will be hard to wash out!). For best results, put a towel on your pillow and leave it overnight, then shampoo it out in the morning.

I did this once every few days for a month, and my hair was gleaming! If the olive smell is too strong for you, jasmine oil and coconut oil work well too. My favorite is Parachute's coconut hair oil that you can find at just about any Indian/South Asian grocery store for about $4.

Do you have any DIY beauty tips you're more likely to turn to now?
