Want to Get Fit? Don’t Go to the Gym this Month

Last weekend, I passed this guy running in the park, gasping for air, barking “c’mon” to himself under what breath he had left. I’m pretty sure he was banging out a New Year’s resolution. And I’m pretty sure he’s not going to be back in the park any time soon.

All I could think when I passed him was: You should have stayed home with the book, Your Body, Your Life, by Kim Lyons (trainer on The Biggest Loser) and Lara McGlashan. Their super-smart slim-down/shape-up program doesn’t require a gym (but does use dumbbells for some exercises), so there’s no excuse for not doing it.

The exercises build on each other realistically, so you don’t try the program, hate it, and use up all your willpower in one day like Gasping Park Guy. Instead, you do the prescribed exercises (especially great for people who haven’t been to the gym for a while, but adaptable to gym rats, too) and follow Kim’s nutrition guidelines (she makes tasty recipes easy), and you firm up and trim down.

But here’s the thing: She knows it’s not always so easy. So along with all the healthy stuff, she shows you how to work with reality and eat dessert, go out for drinks, and more without derailing your whole plan. And who doesn’t need that?
