The 11 Best Clean-Smelling Perfumes Are Like Fresh Laundry and Expensive Soap, Bottled
I could bathe in them.
The change of seasons has me acting like a brand new person, and to be frank, I’m living for it. My foundations? Skin-like and glowy. My lip liners? Long-lasting and transfer-proof. Even my hair routine is becoming as minimal as the rest of my routine. However, as a certified perfume obsessive, my layering combinations are still the cherry on top of a multi-step scenting routine. With that being said, the notes that I’ve been reaching for have definitely changed from the deep, resinous ones I was reaching for in the winter to something much fresher and clean-smelling.
“Clean-smelling perfumes are definitely having a moment right now, and I think it’s because those are the kind of scents you can wear year-round, and literally anywhere—airports, the gym, whatever—and they just work,” fragrance influencer and content creator Kathleen Fuentes (also known as KathleenLights), tells me. “They’re super crowd-pleasing without being overpowering, which is why that category is so popular. They’re just really likable.”
It’s a phenomenon that I’ve been experiencing firsthand. In the past, I’ve stayed away from most perfumes labeled “fresh” or “clean-smelling,” as in my mind, that translated to citrus, which I notoriously have a hard time liking. Still, over the past few weeks, I’ve realized that fresh-smelling perfumes don’t have to automatically equate to zest-heavy formulas, and I’ve been having a blast finding new fragrances that smell fresh and clean, but are still seasonally-appropriate.
Ahead is a list of the best fresh-smelling perfumes that have completely blown me away, just in case you’re looking to revamp your own fragrance wardrobe ahead of summer. Be prepared to be the best-smelling person in every room that you walk into, for the foreseeable future. You’re welcome.
One of the most unexpectedly fresh ingredients that I’ve discovered recently is lavender, and Matiere Premiere’s Metal Lavender takes the note and somehow makes it smell like a fresh, white T-shirt. Musk and cashmeran round out the aromatic top note, and the combination is so stunningly clean, it’s like you just did laundry every time you wear it.
Bubblegum isn’t a note I thought I’d ever find in a fresh-smelling perfume, but I promise, in this perfume, it works really well. This scent is meant to capture the feeling of being in a laundromat, and it is so spot on that it’s a little scary. If you want a perfume that smells like clothes straight out of the dryer (you know, that clean, musky scent), you can’t ask for better than Love-O-Matic.
For something a little less linear, Loewe’s Iris Root may be for you. There’s a bit of spice thanks to the angelica seed note, as well as a sparkling, effervescent citrus from Timut pepper. Iris root is rounded out by neroli, clary sage, cashmeran, and more, creating a perfume that smells equal parts fresh and earthy, perfect for anyone who believes the freshest scents come from nature.
Now, for one of my favorite fresh perfumes of all time, Le Labo’s Another 13. The star of the show is ambroxan, which is a synthetic musk that emulates the stunning smell of ambergris. In this formula, it’s paired with other notes like jasmine and moss, and the combination creates a skin scent that is anything but subtle, but is still crowd-pleasing enough to wear every day, even around the harshest fragrance sceptic.
Creed’s Eladaria perfume reimagines the classic rose note, and they’ve nailed it the result. As someone who doesn’t typically like floral scents, Eladaria straddles the line between a floral and skin scent perfectly, thanks to notes like mandarin, lily of the valley, and ambroxan, all of which flank the rose essence in this perfume beautifully. The result is a fresh, musky, floral masterpiece that feels like the essence of femininity (but don’t worry, anyone can wear it).
Leaning more into a soapy vibe? 724 should be in your cart, like, yesterday. Bergamot and aldehydes open the fragrance before jasmine absolute, sweet pea, and mock orange are revealed at the heart. The base note is comprised of a sandalwood musk, which brings a creamy, airy element to the perfume. It’s like if the perfect day at a park in New York City had a signature scent (the good kind, I promise).
For a creamier take on a fresh scent, Van Cleef’s Santal Blanc should be on your radar. Mandarin, fig milk, violet are combined with sandalwood essence, musk, and tonka bean, and the result is woody, creamy, but somehow still light enough to wear in warmer weather. It’s a head scratcher but it works, so I’m not complaining.
Ginger is one of the best notes to consider on your fresh-fragrance journey, and it’s one of the first notes in The Essential’s Musc. It’s followed by lavender, beeswax, and of course, musk, but the formula is so well-blended that a few sprays will have you smelling like a fresh cloud of happiness.
While this brand is known for its mega-viral gourmand perfume, Bianco Latte, allow me to introduce you to Celeste. Raspberry violet, sea notes, and a citrus accord are all packed into this one bottle. Tack on lavender, vanilla, and ambroxan, and you end up with a fresh and almost candy-like fragrance (I get watermelon Jolly Ranchers, but I’ll let you decide).
Iris is one of my favorite notes of all time, and Prada Infusion d'Iris takes it up another notch. It’s on the slightly more powdery side of things, but the additional neroli and mandarin notes keep it from veering too far into that category, making it the perfect fresh-floral perfume for anyone who’s slowly inching their way into fresh scents.
Sur Tes Levres E.Q. is another iris fragrance that has stolen my heart. This one is a bit more on the skin scent side of the spectrum, thanks to notes like pink pepper, ambrette, and ambroxan, making it an easy reach year-round.
