The 5 Best Eau de Toilette Fragrances for People Who Like Their Perfume to Smell Subtle
Your signature scent doesn't need to fill the room.
I know most people aren’t inclined to believe me when I say this, but smelling good truly is a lifestyle for me. If I’m not recruiting my husband to help me test the latest fragrance releases, I’m finding new products and ways to make my space smell delicious. I even get down with the fancy laundry detergent agenda now. That said, you’re probably not surprised that I wear perfume to bed—eau de toilette, or EDT, to be exact.
You may have heard that term before or have seen it on the packaging of your favorite fragrance. But what exactly does it mean? “Typically, an eau de toilette has a five percent or 10 percent perfume oil concentration and more alcohol content,” J.J. Vittoria, founder of customizable fragrance brand Olfactory NYC, previously told Marie Claire. This means that while they can still have the complex notes that are found in more beast-mode perfumes, eau de toilettes don’t typically last as long as their counterparts. This is because fragrance longevity typically comes from the amount of oil in the formula. Less oil means less scent sticks to the skin, which makes the scent disappear more quickly.
That said, there is absolutely a time and place for a good eau de toilette formula, and I find that place right at the end of my nighttime routine. Once I’ve gotten washed up and have applied all of my oils, lotions, and potions, I love putting on a softer perfume formula that wafts through the air as I do my skincare but isn’t overwhelming to the senses. The point is to gently interact with the scent, without it taking over the room or every single one of your scent glands.
Usually, by the time I go to bed, the formula is more akin to a skin scent—it’s still around, but I’m really the only one who can still smell it—just like I like it. Whether you’re also on the hunt for a good bedtime scent or have a more sensitive nose when it comes to fragrance, I’ve put together a list of the five best women's eau de toilettes currently on the market. Smelling good is a lifestyle, but it doesn’t have to give you a headache.
The Best Women’s Eau de Toilettes
- Best Women’s Eau de Toilette Overall: Chanel Chance Eau Tendre
- Best Gourmand Women’s Eau de Toilette: Snif Me Eau de Toilette
- Best Unisex Eau de Toilette: Diptyque Orpheon Eau de Toilette
- Best Floral Eau de Toilette: Miu Miu Rose Eau de Toilette
- Best Amber Eau de Toilette: Molton Brown Neon Amber Eau de Toilette
Best Women’s Eau de Toilette Overall
You're either just learning about this fragrance or have been a die-hard fan since it was released in 2010. I find Chanel’s Eau Tendre to be one of the lesser-talked-about fragrances from the maision, but it is an absolute stunner. If you’re looking for an elegant citrus floral that can be worn year-round as a signature scent, get your nose on this one asap.
Fragrance Family: Fruity Floral
Key Notes: Grapefruit; Quince; Jasmine; Musk
Size: 3.4 fl. oz
What I Love: Soft, powdery-like composition; Elegant glass bottle that would look good on any vanity
What I Don’t: As can be expected with eau de toilettes, this isn’t the longest-lasting scent in the brand’s lineup
Review for MC: “Chanel’s Eau Tendre is one of the first scents I tried from the house, and to this day it remains one of my favorites. On me, it leans a little more on the powdery musk side of the spectrum, but it’s light enough to layer with other perfumes and create a whole new vibe, while keeping the integrity of the original scent intact. If a chameleon could self-identify as a perfume, I think they’d vibe with this one.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer
Best Gourmand Women’s Eau de Toilette
If skin scents are your jam, allow me to introduce the eau de toilette of your dreams: Snif’s Me. Hilarious play on words aside, the fragrance blends fruity, woody, and musky notes and was intentionally made to sit closer to the skin rather than project and fill a whole room with scent. If you want a cozier EDT, add this to your cart.
Fragrance Family: Fruity Musk
Key Notes: Peach skin; Orris; Musk
Size: 1 fl. oz
What I Love: Affordable find at less than $100; An airy musky scent that doesn’t lean too floral or powdery
What I Don’t: Would love to see bigger-sized bottles available
Review for MC: “Snif is one of those fragrance brands that is extremely hyped, but they deliver every single time. Me is a beautiful combination of some of my favorite notes, including orris, musk, and sandalwood. Not only is it complex enough for me to wear alone, but I also love pairing this with some of my favorite ambroxan perfumes for an almost ethereal scent that makes me feel like an angel who just so happens to be on earth.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer
Best Unisex Eau de Toilette
I couldn’t even get this perfume out of the box before my mom staked her claim on it, and honestly, I don’t blame her. This eau de toilette version has similar notes to the eau de parfum, like juniper berries and cedar, but it also has a green mandarin facet that gives it a lighter, fresher composition in contrast to the eau de parfum. Long story short, if you like smelling refined and a little androgynous, but still approachable, Orpheon’s EDT is your girl.
Fragrance Family: Fresh Woods
Key Notes: Green mandarin; Juniper Berries; Cedar
Size: 2.5 fl oz
What I Love: Retains the complexity of notes that the eau de parfum version has; Last much longer than I expected on skin (a solid eight hours), and well over 24 hours on clothes
What I Don’t: Some people find the eau de toilette to be more masculine-leaning than the parfum
Review for MC: “I overspray this perfume every time I go home to visit my family because my mom kidnapped it as soon as I could even get it out of the packaging. Still, I could understand why because not only does it have the same sultry energy that the original has (the scent was inspired by the founders’ favorite bar, after all), but the added citrus note makes it feel a little more approachable and easy to wear in all seasons, not just the fall and winter, which is when I find myself reaching for the original the most.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer
Best Floral Eau de Toilette
If you’re a floral lover through and through, Mui Mui’s Rose eau de toilette should be on your radar. Beyond the adorable pink packaging, the scent is a fruity floral that highlights one of my favorite notes: Lily of the Valley. The composition is fresh, girly, and a little whimsical—it’s the perfect way to inject some joy into your beauty routine as the weather gets colder and the end of daylight saving time has us all questioning our sanity.
Fragrance Family: Fruity Floral
Key Notes: Lychee; Lily of the Valley; White musk
Size: 3.4 fl oz
What I Love: Adorable packaging; Not too hyper-realistic of a floral scent
What I Don’t: Some people find the dry down to be too powdery
Review for MC: “If you don’t traditionally love a hyper-realistic floral perfume, Mui Mui’s Rose eau de toilette is a fantastic place to start if you still want to find your way into the floral scent family. It’s equal parts fruity and floral thanks to that lychee note, but the bed of musks that are at the base of the fragrance keeps it from veering too much into freshly cut stems territory. It’s one of the safer bets to experiment with for sure.”
Best Amber Eau de Toilette
I don’t hear enough people talking about Molton Brown, and that needs to stop today. While my hands-down favorite scent from the line is Milk Musk, Neon Amber is a beautiful eau de toilette that practically anyone can fall in love with. This is thanks to notes like violet, tonka, cedar, and ambroxan, to name a few, and when you tack on that super sleek and very chic bottle, I’m inclined to say not only do you need to pick this up, but you should probably grab a bottle to gift for the upcoming holiday season, as well.
Fragrance Family: Amber
Key Notes: Mandarin; Violet; Tonka; Cedar; Ambroxan
Size: 3.4 fl oz
What I Love: Beautiful blend of slightly more unusual notes
What I Don’t: For some reason, it’s becoming harder for me to find most Molton Brown scents, so I am praying to the heavens and hoping that this scent (or milk musk) isn’t getting discontinued
Review for MC: “Molton Brown does not get the hype that it deserves, and it’s a shame when the brand has heavy-hitter scents like this one. The EDT concentration allows more beast-mode notes like tonka and cistus absolute to shine without feeling overwhelming, and that truly is the magic of this scent. It’s like a very intentional lesson on restraint, and the brand aced the brief.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer
How Do I Make An Eau de Toilette Last Longer?
As you likely know, eau de toilette isn’t known for its staying power. Still, some scent combinations last longer on the skin than others. “There are certain notes like sandalwood and cedarwood, jasmine, and amber that can be present in an eau de toilette, which, in turn, makes the formula more long-lasting,” Aymar de Chergé, the Vice President of Marketing at Parfums de Marly, tells me. “Some ingredients simply do not have the lasting power that others do (editor’s note: think bergamot, lime, and more citrus-leaning notes that characteristically evaporate quickly), so this is why the spine of a fragrance, as well as the raw materials used, matter so much. It can increase a perfume's longevity by hours.”
So if you have a sensitive nose, are prone to headaches, or prefer lighter fragrances but don’t want to reapply constantly, consider taking a closer look at the notes in the scents you’re drawn to when shopping. Heavier ingredients like woods, ouds, and even some more indolic florals can help retain the eau de toilette’s integrity while also providing the longevity that will make you feel confident wearing it throughout the day.
How you prep your skin can also influence how long your EDT will last. "Before you apply your fragrance, use a rich, nourishing moisturizer," explains fragrance expert Eudora Nwasike. previously told Marie Claire. "This will help to hold the scent longer. If you struggle with [extremely dry] skin, I recommend combining body oil with your body cream to ramp up the moisture." Nwasike adds that your clothes will always retain the scent for longer by slowing down its evaporation process, so if you're hoping to maximize the staying power of your EDT, add a few spritzes to your clothes as well as your skin.
