For reasons that remain a mystery, Hilary Duff and her boyfriend Jason Walsh chose to go with ye olde "Pilgrim and Native American" costume for Halloween, which was obviously a bad call—just ask Chris Hemsworth.
While Duff dressed as a "sexy pilgrim," Walsh opted for a costume that inarguably promotes stereotypes and boils an entire culture down to one (pretty inaccurate) look.
The good news is that Duff apologized unequivocally via Twitter:
I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume.It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my ❤️sorry.October 30, 2016
It's up to indigenous communities whether or not to accept said apology, but it's admirable that Duff issued one so swiftly, and without any "ifs, ands, or buts."
