January Jones' #TBT Just Spawned an Awesome Feminist Hashtag

"1996 resembled 1956 more than I realized."

Most of us devote our #ThrowbackThursday posts to that time we went on an exotic vacation or pics of us at age four wearing nothing but a tutu (guilty). But when you're a Hollywood actor, you probably have much more interesting archives to pull from. Case in point: January Jones' #tbt today, which not only shows the Mad Men actress in one of her earliest modeling gigs, but also spawns an interesting discussion about feminism—and an awesome new hashtag:

#tbt to 1996 when I was modeling for a magazine story talking about women's "issues." 1996 resembled 1956 more than I realized. #bitchesbebossesnow

We have to applaud her for not only indulging our '90s nostalgia, but also pointing out something that probably doesn't get discussed enough: While we often consider Betty Draper's era to be one of the most sexist times for women in the workforce (and have the Peggy Olsons of the world to thank for breaking many of those glass ceilings), even 40 years later—which is less than 20 years ago—the media generally stuck with the notion that man = boss, woman = secretary. Sure, this is just one picture in one magazine, but it's pretty telling. Good for Jones for using our favorite Thursday social media game to playfully highlight a time not so long ago when we still had a very long way to go regarding female stereotypes—and showing just how far we've come. (Want further proof? See the many women who are ruling the world here. #Bitchesbebossesnow, indeed.)
