Update, 5/28: 'Tis all true: Emilia Clarke could have been Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey were it not for the whole modesty pouch component and perhaps a touch of Google-induced self-consciousness.
"I really wanted to work with Sam Taylor-Johnson because she's f*cking amazing," Clarke said in the July issue of Marie Claire UK. "But there is a huge amount of nudity in the film. I'll never say 'I'm never doing nudity,' because I've already done it, but I thought I might get stuck in a pigeonhole that I would have struggled to get out of."
Fair, fair. (I mean, it's fair she had her personal and professional reasons for turning down the role, but it's far less fair that women in Hollywood have so few options they feel like if they take their clothes off more than once they're stuck doing that until their last f*ckable days.)
Also troubling: that one time Clarke Googled herself and found that people on the internet love to comment on actresses' bodies. "Never again. It just takes that one person who says, 'She's a fat bitch,' and you're like, 'I'm a fat bitch!'"
Original post, 3/25: Before Dakota Johnson was cast, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was considered to play Fifty Shades of Grey's Anastasia Steele (the rumors were true). But she just didn't want to get that naked, the actress tells The Hollywood Reporter in its latest issue. "I'd done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again."
Clarke first stripped down for her New York stage debut in 2013 as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and is—as we all know—no stranger to nudity as GoT's Daenerys Targaryen.
She met with Fifty Shades director Sam Taylor-Johnson twice to discuss the role of Anastasia Steele, but she has "no regrets" about turning it down. Power to ya girl.
