Last night, after a performance of the Broadway musical The Color Purple, Jennifer Hudson honored music icon Prince with a tear-jerking cover of his hit "Purple Rain." She opened up about her last exchange with the singer, who passed away Thursday morning.
"Not too long ago, [Prince] called me while we were here and asked me to come out to this event because he was writing his book and he told me you can bring your cast members along. We were honored to be in his presence one last time and we got to have that moment," she told the audience, "He said his music will live on and he will live through his music so we want to keep him alive today with this song."
Hudson was joined by co-star Cynthia Erivo and the entire cast for the emotional rendition. Just wait until her high-note-powered solo comes in at 1:54.
