Demi Lovato has come under fire for Instagramming a sponsored post in which she promotes the detox tea Teami Blends.
"This year is all about #selflove truly taking care of myself and exercising has changed everything for me," she wrote. "@teamiblends has #sponsored my 30 day detox challenge to help get rid of toxins and my bloating for summer," she wrote. "I'm on Day 7 right now & it's so easy!"
She also offered her followers a 20-percent discount on Teami Blends products using the code DEMI.
That's when her comments turned messy. Some followers pointed out that the brand sells Teami Skinny, which promises to help users lose weight quickly. Others were concerned that Demi would vouch for a product that isn't regulated by the Food & Drug Administration (Teami Colon tea has been called out by health officials for potential irritation of the colon).
Most importantly, fans were upset that Demi would promote a detox tea after overcoming an eating disorder and branding herself as an advocate for body-positivity.
"Teas like this have laxative effects and 'purge' the body — therefore is a magnet for eating disorders," one commenter wrote, adding that she herself had battled an eating disorder. "And now [Demi] is promoting [the diet] industry in full awareness that, as an ED spokesperson, many of her followers are vulnerable."
"I just don't get this move on your part," another follower wrote. "You can't just add #selflove to a laxative diet tea and rebrand it as empowering. Promote real health instead."
Meanwhile, Teami doesn't seem too worried...
