A typical native New Yorker, I'm prone to wearing the city's unofficial sartorial color: black. My closet is a sea of black pants, skirts, tops, and bags, so it's great to come across a brand that makes me want to break out of my fashion rut! The Sequence Collection is an accessories line that is all about color, from funky woven bracelets to brightly-patterned bags. And it just so happens that this eye-catching collection is made by El Salvadorian artisans, thus helping local communities through its production.
Founder, designer, and former fashion editor Ariela Suster decided she wanted to give back to her home country of El Salvador by employing artisans and youths from its most at-risk communities. El Salvador has a sky-high poverty rate, and Ariela is helping the local economy by hiring and training countrymen. She also wants to support the culture in which she grew up, so the craftsmen spin her designs from giant looms, a local artistic practice that's been around for hundreds of years. The result? Well, see for yourself. Below are a few of my personal faves. And now that spring is upon us, expect to see me rocking some of these colorful accessories (albeit in my little black dress).
