The Wendell Baker Story
(Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Eva Mendes)
Luke Wilson writes, directs, and stars in this comedy about an ex-con who's determined to turn his life around and win back his girl (Mendes). You really want to hate the predictability of this movie, but Wilson is so damn charming, it's virtually impossible. Throw in the Will Ferrell cameo, and we're putty in Wendell Baker's hands.
THE ANTIFEMINIST FLICK:
(Katherine Heigl, Seth Rogen)
If you forget that it's 2007 and a successful woman wouldn't need to rely on her loser-ish one-night stand to help raise the resulting baby, then you'll enjoy Judd Apatow's fresh script. He takes the romantic comedy to a new level -- one that's actually funny.
THE FEMINIST FLICK:
(Dermot Mulroney, Elisabeth Shue, Carly Schroeder)
A 16-year-old girl in the '70s wants to play soccer, so she tries out for the boys' team. Not a novel idea, but the intense relationship between Gracie (Schroeder) and her dad (Mulroney) out-Beckhams the backstory of most feel-good sports movies. Resist the urge to shout "Grrrl power!" when the credits roll.
