There’s very little I don’t love about summer: sun-soaked beach days, lazy afternoons by the pool, scenic boat rides. My color-treated, naturally fine hair, however, isn’t quite as big a fan. By the time August rolls around, all that saltwater, chlorine, heat, and sunshine has usually left my strands completely fried—and in desperate need of some end-of-summer hair repair. In fact, as celebrity hairstylist Mitchell Ramazon puts it, “Summer can be a perfect storm for hair damage.”
As it turns out, “chlorine and salt can strip away moisture, while repeated UV exposure weakens the hair’s protein structure and roughens the cuticle,” he adds. And it’s not just what you expose your hair to: “Pulling wet hair into a tight bun or brushing it aggressively after swimming can also create additional tension and breakage.” The telltale signs of damaged hair usually include dullness, dryness, frizz, tangling, and split ends. But, Ramazon says, “your color may also fade or look less vibrant, and your hair might feel brittle and suddenly become harder to style.”
Luckily, you don’t need to make an emergency appointment at your nearest salon to undo this summer’s damage. I’ve rounded up the 10 hair repair products my stressed-out strands swear by, along with the formulas beauty pros reach for—so you can restore your hair’s moisture, strength, and shine just in time for Labor Day.

Best Summer Hair Repair Overall
This K18 mask, which doubles as a leave-in treatment, is a favorite of mine and beauty pros alike (and for good reason!). The brand’s key ingredient, K18Peptide, is designed to repair damage caused by bleach, chemical treatments, and heat, so whether your locks are dry, brittle, or simply worse for wear after summer, it can help quickly bring them back to life.
Review: “I had almost given up on my hair. I spent years buying products that promised miracles but delivered disappointment. Then I found K18. This isn’t just another conditioner or mask—it’s molecular hair repair that reaches deeper than anything I’ve ever tried. When nothing else worked, K18 did." —Sephora
Best Oil for Summer Hair Repair
This lightweight hair oil from TRESemmé delivers softer, shinier strands with every pump, which is precisely why Ramazon loves it for damaged hair. He recommends working a small amount into the mid-lengths and ends of damp or dry hair to improve strength, smooth flyaways, and restore manageability. “It helps reduce breakage and gives hair that expensive, polished finish without making it feel greasy,” claims Ramazon.
Review: “I’ve been using this hair oil consistently for two weeks, and I can confidently say that my hair has become noticeably shinier, softer, and more hydrated. I’m specifically trying to repair long-term damage caused by frequent heat styling, and I can attest that this oil, when used together with the matching cream from the same line, has worked exceptionally well for my hair.” — Amazon
Best Leave-In Treatment for Summer Hair Repair
According to Ramazon, “this lightweight leave-in treatment is like a reset button for damaged hair,” thanks to KRT (Keratin Resistance Therapy) and liquid-crystal amino acids that reinforce hair from the cuticle to the cortex. Pro tip: “Apply it through the mid-lengths and ends before styling for hydration, strength, and heat protection.”
Review: “This leave-in treatment is one of those rare repair products that delivers instant results you can actually feel. The formula is lightweight but powerful, and it absorbs quickly without leaving any residue or heaviness. What stands out most is how noticeably smoother and stronger the hair feels right after using it—almost like a mini in‑salon keratin treatment at home.” — Ulta
Best Summer Hair Repair for Swimmers
Consider this conditioning mask a swim cap for your hair (no rubber required!). Originally developed for the first U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming team, it helps protect strands from the drying effects of chlorine, saltwater, and UV exposure. Meanwhile, hydrolyzed elastin and castor oil work overtime to strengthen locks, reduce breakage, and replenish much-needed moisture.
Review: “This product absolutely revolutionized my holiday hair! I wish I had discovered it years ago. It made my hair look great and prevented my vibrant red color from fading in the sun, chlorine, and salt water. Amazing!” — Amazon
Best Summer Hair Repair for Color-Treated Hair
After I noticed my dyed hair looking faded and feeling drier than usual after one too many days in the sun, my hairstylist recommended swapping my usual shampoo for this one from Aveda. Its gentle formula cleanses without stripping my already-fried, bleached strands of much-needed moisture, while helping protect color long-term.
Review: “This shampoo has the best smell of all time. It leaves my hair feeling clean and voluminous! A little goes a long way, so it’s a great value. So far, it’s kept the color consistent in my hair, and the conditioner really does the job with making my hair softer than ever.” — Amazon
Best Hair Accessory for Summer Hair Repair
According to celebrity stylist Marcos Diaz, one of the biggest summer hair mistakes has nothing to do with your products—it’s how you dry your hair. “Hair is at its most fragile when it’s wet, and rubbing it with a traditional bath towel creates unnecessary friction that leads to breakage,” he explains. This ultra-soft microfiber towel absorbs excess water without roughing up the cuticle, helping minimize damage and frizz before styling even begins.
Review: “It does what it's supposed to do: it prevents frizz and preserves curl definition. There's a huge difference in how my hair looks when I use this as opposed to a regular bath towel.” — Amazon
Best Summer Hair Repair for Fine Hair
If your hair is fine like mine, Diaz recommends picking up his go-to pre-wash. “When hair has been exposed to sun, salt water, and chlorine, I like beginning with a pre-wash treatment that replenishes moisture before cleansing.” That’s exactly what you’ll get thanks to strengthening and hydrating ingredients like copper peptides, hydrolyzed silk, niacinamide, and panthenol that don’t weigh down hair, either.
Review: "Just … wow!!! The cooling scalp serum is legitimately cooling. Upon first use of the pre-wash conditioner, I could immediately feel my hair was extremely soft after I washed it off while I was still in the shower!! I felt a difference instantly when wet, and again the next morning after letting my hair dry overnight. I could feel it was already softer. Highly recommend this set!!" — Béssa
Best Hair Repair for Curly Hair
As Diaz tells me, “Healthy hair starts before shampooing.” This pre-shampoo treatment targets three types of hair bonds and is packed with amino acids to help repair damage, boost hydration, and protect against future breakage. The result? Softer, shinier, healthier-looking curls.
Review: “I caused quite a bit of damage to my hair recently through a combination of coloring and heat styling. I tried other treatments, without much improvement. I picked this up during a sale, and wow! My hair is noticeably softer and shinier. It's not a replacement for damaging your hair in the first place, but it definitely helped far more than anything else!” — Ulta
Best Hair Repair for Mature Hair
Mature hair tends to be more fragile, making protection against everyday damage especially important. One of my favorites is this luxe oil from Kérastase, which helps strengthen strands and prevent split ends while controlling frizz and flyaways. It also delivers instant softness and shine without sacrificing manageability.
Review: “I have been using this product for many years. I have aged during that time. In the beginning, it was wonderful!!! Now I dread to think what my hair would be like without it.” — Sephora
Best Hair Repair for Dry Hair
This is one of Ramazon’s favorite weekly treatments for dry hair weakened by coloring, heat, or environmental stress. It works to rebuild all three types of hair bonds while leaving thirsty strands stronger, smoother, and noticeably shinier.
Review: “I used this product for the first time a couple of years ago, and I immediately loved it! I could actually feel a difference in the strength of my hair after about two weeks of use, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone and every hair type!” — Sephora
How Does UV Damage Hair?
“UV exposure creates a form of hair ‘photoaging’,” explains Ramazon. “It can break down proteins and lipids within the hair, weaken the cuticle, and oxidize melanin, which is why natural and color-treated hair can become lighter, warmer, or faded after a lot of time in the sun.” Sadly, he says, “once the cuticle becomes rough or lifted, the hair has a harder time retaining moisture and becomes more vulnerable to frizz, tangling, and breakage.”
Diaz adds that “most people think about protecting their skin from UV rays, but the sun affects hair in many of the same ways.” According to the stylist, “prolonged UV exposure gradually breaks down the proteins that give hair its strength while also oxidizing both natural pigment and artificial hair color.” Meanwhile, “as the cuticle becomes damaged, moisture escapes more easily, leaving hair drier, duller, and increasingly vulnerable to breakage.”
What Ingredients Should I Look for to Repair Damaged Hair?
According to Ramazon, “damaged hair needs both internal strengthening and surface-level conditioning.” That’s why he looks for formulas containing “amino acids, hydrolyzed proteins, keratin-inspired technology, bond-building ingredients, glycerin, panthenol, silicones, and lipids that work together to strengthen weakened areas of the hair, restore moisture, and deliver shine.
Similarly, Diaz recommends looking for products that focus on restoring moisture, strengthening the hair fiber, and reinforcing the cuticle. He claims that healthy hair isn’t the result of one miracle ingredient, but rather about “consistently replenishing what summer has taken away.” That said, he still looks for ingredients like ceramides, botanical oils, and amino acids.
