Friends! Welcome back to Self Checkout. I anticipate you'll find this week's send extra helpful. I want to chat about how to wear color, as I know it's not always easy.

Now, I love wearing color—especially during the summer. As I write this, I’m wearing a purple-and-green rugby dress, and carrying a red handbag. Extreme! But I get it: These summer color trends are great in theory, perhaps a little harder in execution. Which is where I come in! I’ve chosen three of my favorites—mustard yellow, blood orange, and grape purple—and provided ways to style the hues at a beginner, intermediate, and expert level. For more outfit ideas, I highly recommend you read this story. Okay, on to the show!

MUSTARD YELLOW

Beginner:

Dark-wash jorts are an easy foil to this bold hue. Minimalist sandals echo the city-ready vibe.

Intermediate:

Chunky brown flats temper the of-a-kind yellows in this look.

Expert:

Find inspiration in a bag of tropical mix Skittles and go all-out.

BLOOD ORANGE

Beginner:

Avoid Halloween vibes by pairing your orange pants with chocolate brown pieces instead of black. A sky blue bag adds an extra pop of color.

Intermediate:

Here’s another example of how to do of-a-kind color blocking. I’d push it even further by throwing another sunset-ish color, like these fuschia mules, into the mix.

Expert:

Take your linen pants to the beach and complement them with a sugary pink two-piece. Olive green sandals help ground the look.

GRAPE PURPLE

Beginner:

A sleek black sandal (with a dash of complementary green) ensures your dress is the star of your outfit.

Intermediate:

Nothing says “rich” like pairing purple and gold together. Very regal!

Expert:

Go deep on Riviera vibes with accessories from noted Italian fashion houses.
