Another long and busy day at Fashion Week, Friday kicked off with a sunny, temperate early fall weather — perfect for wearing a brilliant polka dot shirt with a suede skirt, (photographed by Sergio Kletnoy and featured on Marie Claire’s brand new Tumblr!. It’s amazing that with so many shows each day, I still manage to be wow-ed and blown away by the innovative designs sent down the runway. Even with each show presenting Spring collections, I want to wear each piece right off the runway — alas, it will be a good six months before I will see them in person again!
United Bamboo transformed a space at Pier 59 to create an intimate runway space, and introduced their minimalist approach to Spring in an otherwise print-saturated fashion week. I loved their take on modern sportswear with perfectly tailored leather blazers, gauzy harem pants, short suits, and floating collars. The silhouettes may not have been particularly groundbreaking, but the details were essential to the beauty of the collection. Design duo Thuy Pham and Miho Aoki really excel at hidden particularities that turn an otherwise ordinary shift dress into a piece that possesses faultless draping.
Mandy Coon has been one of my favorite designers to watch, with an edgy, avant-garde sensibility that she couples with feminine details. (Last season, it was oversize leather bows — this season, delicate silk pleats). The color palette was refined and focused — with cobalt blue and rich yellow at the forefront of a mostly black-and-white collection. The geometries and colors were vaguely reminiscent of Miu Miu’s Spring 2011 collection, but with leather details and harnessing that are authentically Mandy Coon. Overall, the collection was much lighter than her previous, and showed progression and maturity in her approach.
Finally, Cynthia Rowley. I’ve been a fan of Cynthia Rowley’s for years, and every once-in-a-while, I even find a piece in her collection that fits my perfectly. (From her spring collection, it was a beautiful color-blocked, asymmetrical maxi skirt!) I knew from the moment I walked into the venue at Lincoln Center, with a gold, mirrored runway (which guests were carefully reminded not to step on), that I was in for an explosion of glamour. After a bit of a frenzy upon Lindsay Lohan’s arrival, and the subsequent horde of paparazzi, the lights dimmed and the upbeat soundtrack started pumping. Okay, without sounding overzealous, how do I convey how obsessed I am with this collection? From the stunning floral printed blazers, to laser cut leathers, to chunky gilded heels, I’m pretty sure I wanted at least one piece from each look that bolted down the runway. Digital printed leggings might be essential, come spring.
With a day of shows under my belt, I headed out with Sergio Kletnoy, Executive Assistant at Marie Claire, to see Ellie Goulding perform on the rooftop of The Atlas, with the Empire State Building glowing directly over us. Talk about a New York Moment! It was surreal to be enjoying Ellie’s beautiful voice while feeling the brisk air of a September night, and being surrounded by 360-degrees of New York City’s breathtaking skyline. I could not have asked for a more memorable end to the day.
