The 3 Biggest Fashion Trends from the Golden Globes

Most Popular

No one is going to win any awards for risk-taking on last night's Golden Globe Awards red carpet. The trends that reigned supreme were ones we've all seen before, and with good reason: They work. "They're all classics," agrees celeb stylist Jen Rade, whose clients include Angelina Jolie and Katharine McPhee. "Lots of red, lots of black, lots of strapless, nude, and lace. They are all great looks."

LADIES IN RED

Most Popular

From Jennifer Lawrence in a belted coral-red Dior Haute Couture to Jennifer Garner in vibrant Vivienne Westwood to Naomi Watts in a deep burgundy (that hit color from the Fall 2012 runways is sticking around awhile longer!) Zac Posen gown, every shade of red had its moment last night. "You can't go wrong with a classic red," Rade says about the color, which despite the possibility of clashing with the carpet, has always been a safe choice. Perhaps that's why new mom Claire Danes opted for the hue in her Versace dress and Zooey Deschanel keeps rocking it, this time in Oscar de la Renta.

Other celebs in the red trend: Marion Cotillard, Jessica Alba, Megan Hilty

NUDE KNOCKOUTS

Talk about blushing beauties! As Rade says, there's a "sweet sexiness" about this color choice, which was spotted on Les Miserables star Amanda Seyfried. Her lace Givenchy number was one of the more ethereal looks while Amy Adams played with proportions in her self-coined "ballet pink" Marchesa dress. Likewise, Hayden Panettiere opted for more structure with her Roberto Cavalli gown. For added embellishment, we loved Kerry Washington's shimmering, sheer Miu Miu gown, and Rade adored Isla Fisher's jeweled nude Reem Acra. "Stunning!" she says.

Other celebs in the nude trend: Megan Fox, Connie Britton, Jennifer Lopez

PEEK-A-BOO BLACK

The Spring 2013 runway trend of bare midriffs got the red carpet treatment at the Globes, as did some plunging necklines — and what brought them all together was a black backdrop. SNL vet Kristen Wiig bared her flat abs in a simple, black Michael Kors number, and Nicole Kidman showed her love for structure with a black Alexander McQueen dress with a ribbed midriff. Also in McQueen, Kate Hudson turned heads in a striking black dress by the late designer with gold collar and belt embellishments … and a sexy keyhole. Similarly, Eva Longoria wore a custom Pucci black lace and chiffon gown with not only a keyhole but also a thigh-high slit. And Girls star Allison Williams showed off a navel-grazing neckline in J. Mendel.

Other celebs in the black trend: Salma Hayek, Katharine McPhee, Julianna Margulies

So, how do you get these trends to work for you off the red carpet?

Although the nude trend can be the trickiest of the three to pull off ("it would depend on the person's skin tone, hair color, and eye color," Rade says), it's still possible. "These trends are so easy to incorporate into everyday life," says Rade. "Stores like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls have gorgeous on-trend items like lace tops, fabulous black designer dresses and fitted jackets, and red in all forms to mix into your existing wardrobe. Even a touch of lace adds a sensualness to anything."
