Q: I have my first gala and no idea what to wear! My wardrobe is lackluster when it comes to evening wear -- I only own a little black dress, which I bought three seasons ago. Is there anything I can buy for the ball that will be formal enough but still work for an evening cocktail party?

A: The little black dress goes a long way and never goes out of style. But if you want something new, try a dress that falls below your knee (but not necessarily a gown). Look for a simple bias-cut or ball-skirt dress in silk or another luxurious fabric. Try a sleeveless or skinny-strap style with a draped neck or deep V-cut. Black is a perfect color -- it goes with everything and works in any season.

Your accessories can spice up the ensemble. Look for traditional items like long satin gloves, a small glittering purse and sexy, strappy shoes. Try this season's heels with diamante details. And of course, jewelry always adds some sparkle -- try dainty dangling earrings and bracelets. The best part: These accessories will also work with your little black dress, so you'll be able to get plenty of use out of them.
