How to Wear Red Lipstick Video
The lipstick queen, Poppy King, gives her tips for re-creating the classic look, finding just the right shade, and making the color last all day long.
Hi, I'm Ying Chu, the Beauty Director at Marie Claire. I'm here at Space NK, New York, and I'm gonna be speaking with 'Red Lipstick Queen,' Poppy King. So, Poppy, you are known as the 'Lipstick Queen.' How did you earn that moniker?
Well, I have been wearing red lipstick the moment- well, I actually, I lied. I was wearing it at high school, you're not supposed to- officially, from the moment that I finished high school.
Was there someone who inspired you to wear red? What drew you to it?
Well, it was really when I was a teenager watching all of the, sort of, classic movies and seeing that fantastic, sort of, classic 1940's mouth. Basically, I always wanted to be able to sort of recreate that look but in a modern way.
Now, I'm always impressed by how perfect your lipstick always looks-
Oh, thank you.
how you can have a whole meal, go to drinks, do a presentation and there's no lipstick on your teeth, there's nothing smudged. How do you keep it that way?
Well, it depends on the lipstick and I guess, it's, you know, clearly, I'm biased with mine-
But I would say that the general tip, if you're looking for a lipstick whether it be red or any color-
is- the key word I set for is traction-
that it doesn't feel too slippery, that it actually has some grip as you're putting it on.
And that really, really will be a long-lasting lipstick. And if you're not used to seeing yourself in red,-
wear it around the house. Like, do the vacuuming in it-
in only red lipstick-
you know, do the dusting. Well, you know, let's not get too saucy.
Right. Now, how does someone go about finding the right shade for them?
The right red will make your hair, your skin, and your eyes lighter. So, the No. 1, absolute, all-time tip for wearing red lipstick in the 21st century-
is to minimize your eye make-up. You really need to be much more strategic with all your adornment with red lipstick-
because red lipstick is so much of a statement that you can sort of-
pare back other things. Put your red lipstick on first and then, do your eye make-up 'cause then, you'll know where to stop. Play around. It's like, be your own lipstick queen-
and play around.
