Sometimes, I feel silly complaining about my fine hair texture. It doesn't cause me much grief at all, and I understand that saying it's "too silky to do anything with" gives "my lobster is too buttery" energy, and I'm self-aware enough to know that. But when it's constantly slipping through my fingers, falling flat the second I try to do anything with it (even after a recent date with the bleach bowl—a setup I was sure would make it a little less fluid), what am I supposed to do?
Complain a bit, sure, but also work a really good mousse for fine hair into my palms and run them through my freshly washed strands. If you have hair akin to mine, you know that mousse can be a godsend for adding volume and just enough grit so the aforementioned silky strands can hold a shape for once.
"There are so many different types of mousses; just make sure you use the product that caters to your specific needs," Sophie Rose Gutterman, celebrity hairstylist, previously told MC. "The three main types of mousses are for moisture, for hold, and for refreshing." Fine hair specifically should opt for formulas that prioritize humectants like panthenol and aloe vera that hydrate without the grease. Avoid heavier oils such as castor and coconut, which are excellent for coarse, curly hair types but will instantly weigh down delicate strands.
Ahead, discover my very favorite mousses for fine hair—I've tried many, and these are the stars.
The Tried-and-True
There comes a time in every fine-haired girl's life when she needs to pick a go-to hair mousse. Mine was discovered a little too late for my liking (the number of events I've gone to with flat hair...devastating), but alas, I can share my trial-and-error with you all. These options are fantastic.

Sophia Vilensky before and after using Davines hair mousse and letting her fine strands air dry.
I trust Davines with every step of my hair care routine, styling very much included. This leave-in, liquid-to-foam mousse—a sister to the brand's beloved hair milk—was formulated with fine hair in mind. It adds light body and volume while leaving your strands shinier and silkier (!!), without making the "let's make something happen here" job any harder. I love it for air drying—it emphasizes the slight wave I have—but it's also great before heat styling (and will even protect your hair from the damage that comes with it).
Another brand that can do no wrong in my book: Crown Affair. Also air dry ready, this mousse works for all hair types to provide soft, touchable texture without any crunch. After putting it in, I like to work a few twists into my hair or throw a couple braids in, let it dry, and appreciate the newly introduced definition, volume, and movement.
Drugstore Favorites
Though a lot of the options on this list are on the pricier side, you can absolutely get a great mousse for fine hair without spending an exorbitant amount of money. Some stellar drugstore choices, coming right up.
The fine hair Reddit boards (my besties, TBH) are full of fans of L'Oreal's Boost It Volume Inject Mousse. Infused with thickening agents, this lightweight, aerated mousse will provide up to 24 hours of volume so your favorite style can endure anything the day has in store for it.
This year, Tresemmé's Extra Ultra Fine Hold Hairspray was named the first-ever best hairspray winner in Marie Claire's first-ever Reader's Choice Awards. Its mousse-format sister is equally beloved and is great for ultra-fine hair that needs some equally thoughtful shaping.
For Great-Smelling Hair
Hair that smells nice and has tons of body? We really can have it all. These mousses for fine hair are great at their job to begin with, but their scents bring them to a whole other level of excellence. And if you took a little longer to get out the door because you were doing your hair? Don't worry. Extra perfume is unnecessary when you have already worked these products into your strands.

Infused with argan oil and an anti-static agent for touchable, frizz-free results, Moroccanoil's super-lightweight mousse deserves accolades in every category. Still, I'm putting it here because every time I use it, I can't stop smelling my hair. Like all the brand's products, the scent is absolutely delightful. And the volume it affords these fine strands?! Equally out of this world.
I don't need to tell you how great Oribe's product lineup smells, but I will. Once again, the mousse is good enough to stand on its own (it plumps the hair shaft so you see big-time volume), but the notes of calabrian bergamot, white butterfly jasmine, and sandalwood in the signature Côte d’Azur fragrance really elevate this one.
For Major Volume
Again, I feel silly whining about this, but if I may have just a second to list my hair complaints, lack of volume (a real issue!) comes next to too silky. These mousses for fine hair fix that problem in seconds.
A new iteration of Redken's beloved Love Guts 10, this mousse was made to give your roots lift "like no other." While it offers a long-lasting, natural feel and texture, there's nothing natural about the volume it provides—at least based on what I'm used to. It's magic in a bright green bottle.
Of course, the man who invented "The Rachel" would know a thing or two about adding volume to fine hair. With a bottle of this and some long layers, we're unstoppable. Aptly named "The Hair Mousse," it enhances natural texture, provides big, bouncy volume with no stickiness, and offers heat protection up to 450 degrees.
Fine-ly Formulated
Finally, we have a selection of mousses that were specially made for fine strands. While I highly respect a "great for any texture" product, it's sometimes nice to have something formulated just for you.
On the long list of Virtue's virtues, you'll find this soft purple bottle. Weightless and ready to offer you plenty of volume and shine, it features the brand's signature Alpha Keratin 60ku protein, which reveals hair that’s "shinier, stronger, and overall healthier" with regular use. You'll also find panthenol, which nurtures, supports, moisturizes, and strengthens.
Fun name? Check. Great product? Double-check. This mousse was developed to give those with fine hair types weightless body, volume, and shine without any buildup. There's no stickiness but plenty of softness, and I also love how the emulsify-yourself, no-shaking-needed formula feels upon application.
