Liquid Bronzers Are My Winter Hack to Defeating Dullness

This glow is unbeatable.

Growing up in Southern California, I didn’t have to chase a glowing (fake) tan—a lit-from-within complexion was easily in reach with the sun streaming through a backdrop of palm trees. Things shifted, though, when I moved to New York City, where my chestnut-colored skin seemed to dull as the sun hid behind towering buildings. My solution? The best liquid bronzers.

Up until my move, powdered bronzers like Benefit Cosmetics's Hoola Bronzer and Physicians Formula's Butter Bronzer were my go-tos. I didn’t experiment with liquid bronzers until I noticed the cold winter months zapped my skin of any moisture. The only problem? Not all liquid bronzers are created equal. Some streak or settle into patches, while others are so watery they drip down your cheek before you even get the chance to blend. And with hundreds of concoctions on the market, it’s difficult to know what’s even worth the splurge. With a firm footing in the beauty space, I set out to find the best of the best.

I enlisted some backup, too. My mom, Veronica McAuliffe, was in town, so we joined forces and tested dozens of blends, comparing textures, finishes, and luminosity from brands like Armani Beauty, Rare Beauty, and Tarte. Our contrasting complexions, skin textures, and concerns gave us a broad testing ground, revealing which formulas truly deliver warm, glowy cheekbones for days.

The Best Liquid Bronzers

What Should I Look for In a Liquid Bronzer?

There isn’t a single liquid bronzer that works for everyone—especially when texture, finish, and pigment all play a major role. So, finding the right formula for you is just as crucial as the product itself. Nicole Faulkner (otherwise known as @lipsticknick), Emmy Award-winning makeup artist and e.l.f. Cosmetics Senior Director of Global Artistry suggests opting for a bronzer that’s “highly pigmented yet lightweight, so it’s easy to blend and build for a radiant, sculpted look.” Ulta Beauty Pro team member Mat Wulff echoes the same sentiment, cautioning against “anything that turns patchy as you blend—a seamless finish is the goal.”

Beyond blendability and color payoff, celebrity makeup artist and on-air beauty correspondent Neil Scibelli suggests skipping formulas with “too much shimmer,” since you can always add luminosity later with highlighter.

How Do I Find the Right Liquid Bronzer Shade?

Finding the right liquid bronzer shade for your complexion doesn’t have to be difficult—in fact, it’s as easy as selecting a hue that’s “two to three shades deeper than your skin tone or foundation color,” says Scibelli. Faulkner further advises choosing a shade focused on your undertones (warm, cool, neutral, or olive), giving your skin a “sun-kissed glow and subtle sculpting.” Another pro tip: create a “seamless, cohesive look” by matching your bronzer to your neck and chest, Wulff advises.

How Do I Apply Liquid Bronzer?

How to apply liquid bronzer depends on the finish you’re aiming for. For a natural and diffused result, Scibelli reaches for a beauty sponge or synthetic blush brush, focusing on the areas the “sun would naturally hit”—including the forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and jawline.

For a sculpted bronze, Wulff relies on a dense brush for “the most payoff and control.” He suggests “pumping or swiping the bronzer onto the back of your hand first to warm it up,” noting that applying it directly to the face can release too much product and lead to “patchiness and a cakey finish.” For the most seamless blend, he suggests using “stippling motions.” You can always go back in with a makeup sponge to diffuse harsh lines.

What’s the Difference Between Liquid Bronzer Drops, Creams, and Serums?

The difference between liquid bronzer drops, creams, and serums come down to use, application, and finish. Liquid bronzer drops are great for mixing into your daily moisturizer for a “subtle, radiant glow,” says Faulkner. Gel and cream hybrids offer a “richer, more pigmented formula with buildable coverage,” according to Wulff. Breathable serum formulas are more sheer and natural, perfect for anyone seeking “hydrating skincare benefits,” says Scibelli.

How We Tested

Our testing process merged long-time editor favorites with new discoveries. We also tapped professional makeup artists to learn about their top picks. From there, we used reviews, online sentiment, and first-person research to select our top contenders.

We evaluated each on ease of use, pigment payoff, shade range, and lasting power. We also considered packaging and versatility. Our resulting pool comprised the above top picks on the market.
