How to Anti-Age Your Lips Like You Do Your Face

Your 70-year-old self will thank you.

The outer corners of our eyes. The backs of our hands. The neck and décolletage area. Those godforsaken laugh lines. Yes, there are certain areas that are more prone to wrinkles than others. A slight glimmer of hope? The lips aren't one of them. But that doesn't make it impossible.

If you want to keep your pout plump and wrinkle-free forever, there are certain measures that must be taken, immediately—yes, even if you're a bright-eyed, fine-line-free 20something. Here to break 'em down is none other than anti-aging wizard Peter Thomas Roth.

Use SPF on Your Lips at All Times

Simply put: Sun exposure speeds up the aging process, which makes protection for your lips just as necessary as say your face or neck.

"Most people don't use sunscreen on their lips or they feel that lipstick is enough because it provides a barrier, but everyone should be using a lip balm during the day that contains sunscreen to protect from harmful UVA/UVB rays," explains Roth.

Keep Them Moisturized

The skin on our lips is much thinner than that on our face. Plus—unlike the rest of our body—our pouts don't possess sebaceous glands (they keep skin moisturized), which makes an extra dose of moisture essential to avoiding painful cracks. Naturally, this is important for preventing fine lines in the long run. So keep a balm with SPF on you at all times.

"Consider how often you eat, drink, or wipe your mouth—with this in mind, make sure to reapply as necessary," advises Roth, who formulated his My Pink Bombshell Lip Balm with aloe, mango butter, shea butter, and antioxidants (hi, Vitamin E!) that help fight free radicals i.e. pollution.

Drink Plenty of Water

H20 hydrates your body from the inside out, which is great for your lips, as well as your entire body—especially during the dry winter months. But when you take a sip, the water that lingers around your lips is great for keeping your moisture in check, too—especially because licking your lips can make them drier than they were before, as saliva is quicker to evaporate.

Try An Anti-Aging Lip Treatment

If you want to take extra precaution/keep your lips looking soft and plush on the regular, you can take an extra step by adding an anti-aging lip treatment—which goes beyond simply moisturizing—to your regimen. A standard formula will deeply hydrate, increase volume, improve definition, smooth, and prevent/minimize lines with powerful active ingredients. We love Roth's Un-Wrinkle Lip Treatment, which prevents further depletion of existing fullness with a high concentration of eight peptides and neuropeptides that reinforce the skin's structure.
