  • The Big Little Lies opening credits saw some changes for scene two—and might offer some clues as to what might happen the rest of the season.
  • The biggest change? How much the kids have grown up since season one.

The season 2 premiere of Big Little Lies has finally arrived, and immediately we noticed how much has changed since we last saw the ladies of Monterey—even from the opening credits.

One element we were happy to see didn't change was the song, "Cold Little Heart" by Michael Kiwanuka, which still plays peacefully along with the familiar scenic shots of the Pacific Ocean, kids running down a school hallway, the silhouette of a man and woman, and a woman holding a gun.

But after there, a few things appeared very different. First, unlike in season one—which featured all of the main characters driving with their faces partially covered—this time around we see got to see the full faces of Madeline McKenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), Renata Klein (Laura Dern), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), and Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) in their cars. Seeing each character head-on might be a signal that this season, each character will have to come out of the shadows and face their secrets—and lies.

One new addition that we saw coming, of course, was a new character added to the credit lineup: Meryl Streep, who plays Celeste's mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright. In the credits, she's also driving—presumably headed to Monterey to find out what really happened to her son, Perry Wright, who was played in season one by Alexander Skarsgård.

Next came the most surprising change in the opening credits: The kids are all grown up! And unlike season one's opening credits where one of the twins was left out (Celeste's son, Max, who was discovered to be bullying Renata's daughter Amabella), this time around, all of the children are in the clip. Chloe (Darby Camp), Skye (Chloe Coleman), Ziggy (Iain Armitage), Amabella (Ivy George), and Max and Josh (Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti) look older and totally ready to start second grade.

But perhaps the biggest clue to what we can expect from the rest of season 2 of Big Little Lies happens at the end of the oepning credits. In a slow motion shot of the Monterey 5 walking down the beach, we noticed that while Madeline, Celeste, and Renata are walking closely together, Jane and Bonnie are further away in their own twosome. The space between Bonnie and Madeline seems particularly telling, especially after seeing how distant she was putting herself from the rest of the women in the first episode. Could this be a hint that she and Jane both could cause trouble for the five?

We'll have to keep watching to find out.
