Update, 6/15: You know, we are fully on board with this jokey, melodramatic thing now, because A Deadly Adoption looks OTT insane in the best possible way.
The full trailer is out now, and in it, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig play it straight as a couple yearning for a child birth mom Jessica Lowndes is carrying in her creepy/sexy belly. There's runny eyeliner, a fateful pistol, some shots of pushed-up pregnant boobs, and quite a bit of single white female-ing, which all together add up to "I have to see this hot mess because 'hot mess' was exactly what they were going for." Campy trailer right this way.
Update, 6/11: Just kidding. Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell's Lifetime movie is still on—*so* on that a promo spot for it debuted today.
In the tense teaser trailer, an angry lady speeds toward Will Ferrell as he stands in the middle of the road with some bloodstains on his hoodie, KWiig aims a gun, and there aren't any jokes or Khaleesi impressions at all. But somehow, we're still not 100 percent sure this isn't a spoof of some kind? #weirdvibes
Update, 4/3: We owe everyone an apology. Because we, as a site that reported the original news of a Kristen Wiig/Will Ferrell Lifetime movie, are part of the reason that they have abandoned the project. Yep, the hilarious duo will no longer be gracing our TV screens because someone told someone who leaked it online and now—now we're just all sad and re-watching their Golden Globes bit, wishing it was a full-length film.
"We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public," Ferrell told Entertainment Weekly. "Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film."
We're sorry. We're SORRY.
Original Post, 4/2: Two of the most hilarious people in Hollywood are teaming up for a comedy you never knew you needed. According toThe Hollywood Reporter, SNL alumni Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell are going to star in a Lifetime movie called A Deadly Adoption.
The "campy and fun" thriller will feature the stars as a couple who take care of a pregnant woman (Jessica Lowndes), and want to adopt her child, until things go haywire. The movie, which comes out this summer, is expected to "wink" at the so-bad-it's-good Lifetime movie genre as the network turns 25. But it's not being considered a parody outright, according to Entertainment Weekly. Ferrell and Wiig have already filmed the project in secret, which is actually pretty impressive.
This isn't the first time Wiig and Ferrell have taken on a TV genre. They also worked on The Spoils of Babylon, a faux-melodrama on IFC. In fact, A Deadly Adoption was written by Andrew Steele, who also wrote The Spoils of Babylon. So if over-the-top line readings and incredible wigs are your thing, this Lifetime movie is going to be for you.
The announcement came on April 1, which is suspect, especially coming from two comedians. But The Hollywood Reporter's first line is "This is no April Fools' joke." So here's hoping this is real, because our hearts couldn't take it otherwise.
