Decades later, these low-effort looks remain incredibly chic.

When I first watched the trailer for FX’s Love Story, my eyes were glued to the screen. Premiering February 12, the nine-part, Ryan Murphy-produced series follows the riveting romance between Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr.—a complex relationship that ultimately ended in a tragic 1999 plane crash.

While I certainly plan to binge-watch the show for the plot, I’ll also be tuning in for the on-screen wardrobe of Carolyn’s character, played by Sarah Pidgeon. After all, CBK was—and still remains—a ‘90s minimalism fashion icon, revered among style connoisseurs as the ultimate It girl. She worked as a publicist for Calvin Klein, and mastered the art of pared-down dressing like no other, elevating jeans-and-tee outfits and making even the simplest LBD feel distinctive. Often dressed in quiet-luxury brands like Prada and Yohji Yamamoto, CBK staunchly avoided loud logos, vibrant prints, and even jewelry.

Although she seldom granted the press access to her personal life, Bessette-Kennedy did express herself through fashion. She allowed her clothes to do the talking. Nearly three decades after her untimely passing, her outfits continue to spark conversation.

For a ‘90s enthusiast with a fondness for slip dresses and cigarette jeans like myself, CBK is one of the greatest style muses. As such, I’ve become quite the expert in emulating her aesthetic. Ahead, I’ve demonstrated how to do just that, sharing seven CBK looks worth copying in 2026. You’re bound to spot some of these outfits on Love Story, but why wait to incorporate them into your own closet?

The Button-Down Shirt

Crisp button-downs convey sophistication, and CBK knew that best. Here, she paired a sharp Yohji Yamamoto top with a contrasting black maxi skirt from the label. Finished with simple strappy sandals, this enduring outfit formula transcends time.

The Pencil Skirt

Pencil skirts might be trending again now, but let it be known that Bessette-Kennedy co-signed the style decades ago. Teamed with a Prada sweater, a pair of glossy boots, and a structured tote bag, she made this look feel more casual than corporate.

The Bootcut Jean

Alongside baggy jeans and Canadian tuxedos, bootcut bottoms also rose to popularity during CBK’s era. Consider coordinating the denim trend with chic basics, like a T-shirt, a buttoned coat, and sleek boots. Minimal accessories, like a headband and oval sunglasses, will complete the look nicely.

The Slip Skirt

Defined by a slinky silhouette and sumptuous shiny fabric, slip skirts are emblematic of ‘90s fashion. According to Carolyn, the best way to wear them is with an off-the-shoulder top, a pair of pointy kitten heels, and a velvety clutch.

The Black Knee-High Boot

Black knee-high boots were non-negotiables in every ‘90s minimalist wardrobe worth its salt. To showcase the silhouette, CBK opted for a Miu Miu midi dress and a cropped coat. Rooted in versatility, this it the type of outfit that can transition from day to night with ease.

The Plain Tank Top

The beauty of this CBK ensemble is that you likely have everything it takes to assemble it—all you need is a tank top and a pair of cropped jeans. This off-duty uniform works well for moments when you don’t want to put a ton of energy into styling. Just make sure to elevate the look with heeled sandals (a low-effort, high-reward styling hack).

The Loafer

Loafers are inherently preppy, but they don’t necessarily have to read academic. Soften up the stiff shoe with relaxed jeans and a plush coat. Then, add some outfit finishers into the mix, like CBK’s signature shades-and-headband combo.
