What Do Moms Wear "Out Out"?

Because jeans, a nice top, and heels aren't the only answer anymore.

The first time I went out out after having a baby, I felt like I was doing something slightly illegal. I was genuinely excited to leave the house, but I also hadn’t quite given myself permission to miss bedtime, stay out late, or put on the clothes I associated with my life before her. Getting dressed added another layer of stress.

Somehow the phrase “going-out outfit” still conjures the college-era formula of jeans, a tiny top, and heels, even though I hadn't dressed that way in years. But no equally clear-cut formula has replaced it. The group chat was no help; everyone else was asking the same thing. Are we wearing heels? Are flats too casual? Is this an actual outfit night, or just good jeans and a jacket?

You don’t have to be a new mom to recognize that feeling. Your kids might be older, your social life might look completely different, or your closet may have gone largely untouched while fashion moved on without it. Sometimes your clothes don't fit the way they used to, or they do—but they still don't feel like the right answer.

Ahead, the pieces I’m buying as I rebuild my going-out wardrobe now—from the tops that still feel special to the shoes that make sense for grown-up gatherings, plus the outfit formulas that answer the question everyone seems to be asking: What are we wearing out these days?

If You Haven't Gone Out in a While

Collage of elegant going-out outfits featuring black sheer dresses, a gold slip dress, a sculptural white gown, oversized shirting, pearl accessories, and a crystal evening bag.

I remember the first time I had dinner plans with a closet that was full of clothes that belonged to a version of my life I hadn't lived in many months. If you're breastfeeding, maybe your favorite tops suddenly make pumping impossible. If your body has changed, the going-out pieces you once reached for probably no longer feel quite right. And if your kids are older, your wardrobe may simply be due for an update after years of not investing in it. Rather than rebuilding your closet every time life shifts, I'd start with a small capsule: black trousers, high-rise denim, a crisp button-down, a relaxed blazer, a silk skirt or slip dress, comfortable kitten heels, and a really good bag. They're the kinds of pieces that make getting dressed for dinner feel effortless again—and they'll earn their keep long after the night is over.

If Your Dinner Outfits Feel Dated

    Mom going outfits

Collage of chic evening outfits featuring a black one-shoulder jumpsuit, oversized shirting, relaxed black-and-white separates, a beaded fringe bag, and a flowing striped dress.

The last time you really thought about a girls' night look, everyone was still wearing skinny jeans, a "nice top," and YSL tributes. Now, there's more freedom, but less guidance. A great pair of relaxed trousers with a fitted knit, dark denim with an interesting jacket, or a column skirt with a simple button-down all feel current without requiring you to become a different person—or buy into a trend you'll regret by next season.

Focus on updating the proportions. Trade a cropped blazer for one with a little more length. Swap skinny jeans for a straighter silhouette, or balance a fuller pant with a fitted (but not tiny) top—more on this later. If your closet already has plenty of basics, spend your money on the finishing pieces—a sculptural belt, a sharper flat, or an interesting evening bag. They're often what make an outfit feel like it belongs in 2026 rather than 2016.

If You Don’t Want to Wear a Tiny Top

Collage of evening looks featuring statement silver jewelry, a sheer floral dress, an open-back black dress, a printed jacket with jeans, and a black midi dress with a clutch.

The going-out top is practically a millennial fashion institution: dressier than a T-shirt, way more impractical, and almost always worn with jeans—often low-rise. I’m not interested in retiring the category, but I do think it has to grow up. Maybe you still want something slightly cropped, sheer, or backless, but with enough structure to wear a real bra underneath. The point is finding something that still gives you that distinctly millennial thrill of having a top for going out, only in a version that suits the way you dress now.

Instead of asking whether a top is "sexy enough," we're now asking whether it feels special enough. Can I picture wearing it to dinner, a birthday, or drinks with friends? Will it work with more than one bottom in my closet? If the answer is yes, well, long live the going-out top.

If You Have Five Minutes to Get Dressed

    mom going out outfit

Six outfit photos showing transitional evening looks, including sheer dresses, relaxed tailoring, a one-shoulder jumpsuit, a printed skirt, and wide-leg black trousers styled with sandals and heels.

I used to think getting dressed in five minutes was one of my better talents. Now it's literally how long I have.

Between drop-off, work, and plans later that night, I'm not standing in front of my closet trying on three different options. I reach for the pieces I already know will work: a matching set, a one-and-done dress, or great pants with a really nicely fitting blazer.

If you're already dressed for the day, the art isn't building an entirely different outfit—it's figuring out the one thing worth changing. Maybe that's swapping your everyday mom bag for the little satin pouch you used to save for weddings. Maybe it's changing into a kitten-heel mule or choosing a dress in silk instead of cotton poplin. Sometimes it's simply the difference between a trouser that puddles over your shoe and one with a cleaner, slightly cropped hem. Those small shifts do far more than starting over from scratch. The thought of changing out all of my jewelry before dinner is frankly the bane of my existence. One meaningful swap is usually all it takes—and it gets me out the door on time.
