The latest exhibit at Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology showcases the myriad ways the LGBT community has contributed to fashion over the past 300 years. “A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk,” opening this week and running through January 4th, 2014, aims to illustrate how gay men and women have shaped not only fashion but also our ideas surrounding sex and gender roles.
The exhibit will display 100 ensembles ranging from 18th-century menswear tied to an emerging gay subculture to 21st-century high fashion. Adrian, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, and Jean Paul Gaultier are among the numerous designers and labels featured in the show, which also features several menswear looks worn by Marlene Dietrich. This exhibit is not to be missed.
