The 7 Best Blush Tints for a Soft, Watercolor Flush
My makeup looks ten times fresher since incorporating one into my routine.
For the past few months, I’ve slowly become less interested in blushes that look overly too bright or overly heavy. Don’t get me wrong—I still love a sculpted blush moment every once in a while, but lately, I’ve been reaching for blush tints almost exclusively. A big part of that comes from the watercolor makeup trend that’s been taking over my TikTok feed and, honestly, my own routine. Instead of harsh contour, super-intense pigment, or anything that looks too perfectly placed, the entire vibe is softer and more diffused. “Nothing looks too sharp or sculpted,” makeup artist Corey White previously told MC. “The blush, lips, and eyes have this diffused, flushed effect that feels dreamier, effortless."
That aesthetic is basically what blush tints were made for. Unlike powders or thicker cream formulas that can sometimes sit on top of the skin, blush tints melt in quickly and leave behind a sheer wash of color that looks more like a natural flush than makeup. They’re lightweight, easy to blend, and nearly impossible to overdo—which is probably why I keep throwing them into my bag lately instead of my usual powder compacts.
“A blush stain is exactly what it sounds like—it stains the skin with a wash of color rather than sitting on top of it," says celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm. "The finish is sheer and natural. It’s one of my favorite categories right now because the result looks effortless in a way that’s hard to fake with other formulas." In other words, if your goal is a blush that looks soft and fresh, like a natural glow, this is the makeup category to know.
The Best Blush Tints
- Best Blush Tint Overall: Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Liquid Lip + Cheek Blush Stain
- Best Long-Lasting Blush Tint: Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint
- Best Luxury Blush Tint: Victoria Beckham Beauty Colour Wash Blush Water Tint
- Best Drugstore Blush Tint: Etude Dear Darling Water Tint
- Best for Mature Skin Blush Tint: Laura Geller Serum Blush Liquid Cheek Tint
Benetint is basically the blueprint for blush stains. The iconic formula originally started as a custom tint made for exotic dancers to enhance their nipples on stage, which somehow only adds to its legacy status. The watery texture melts into skin almost instantly and leaves behind the prettiest natural flush. It’s also smudge-, transfer-, and kiss-proof, so once it sets, it truly stays put.
Shades: 8
What I Love: Original blush stain; Universally flattering; Versatility is awesome
What I Don't: Easily spills
Review for MC: "I've used this stain for as long as I can remember, and I haven't gone very long without using it in my life. It will forever remain the blush and lip tint to beat. It's lasted this long for a reason." — Siena Gagliano, Beauty Editor
This is my personal favorite because the texture is just so different from anything else out there. The jelly formula literally bounces against the skin, giving the cheeks a juicy, fresh-looking color that lasts all day. Most blush tints wear well, but this one especially does not budge. It also contains soothing aloe and seawater, which gives it a cooling effect that feels amazing during summer.
Shades: 7
What I Love: Includes 7 shades with one pH-reactive option for a unique color on each wearer; Lasts the longest of any formula; Mess-free application
What I Don't: Sometimes when I apply it on top of foundation, it picks up formula if I'm not careful
Review for MC: "The color Splash—a berry plum—has been solidified as my summer 2026 go-to. This jelly formulation is so cool to apply and stays on through long days at the beach and sweaty days on the subway. I'm obsessed." — Siena Gagliano, Beauty Editor
The Victoria Beckham Colour Wash basically became the poster child for watercolor makeup. Every restock goes viral almost immediately, largely because the formula creates that sheer, diffused flush everyone’s trying to replicate right now. The texture is incredibly lightweight and watery, so the pigment blends into the skin. Somehow, it manages to make cheeks look glowy without looking shiny.
Shades: 3 blush; 2 bronzer
What I Love: Incredibly natural, diffused look; Each and every color is gorgeous; The product that, in my opinion, inspired the watercolor makeup trend
What I Don't: Shades are constantly sold out
Review for MC: "Victoria Beckham Beauty gets it right almost every time, and this blush is no exception. While I also love the bronzer colors, nothing beats a stunning pink hue on my skin that looks like I was literally kissed by the sun." — Siena Gagliano, Beauty Editor
K-beauty has been ahead of the blush tint trend for years (per usual in the beauty space), and this affordable favorite proves it. Recommended by Holm, the water-based formula delivers bright color while still looking sheer and skin-like once blended out. It fits perfectly into that glass-skin aesthetic Korean beauty is known for. Plus, the price makes experimenting with vivid shades feel way less intimidating.
Shades: 4
What I Love: Awesome pigment that can be built up or sheered out; Affordable price tag; Doesn't budge
What I Don't: Testers note that it lasts longer on the cheeks than the lips
Customer Review: "Honestly, this ink is really good. It lasts a long time and the colors look super vibrant right from the start. It doesn’t smudge or fade easily, so it goes a long way. If you want something that holds up and looks great, this is a solid choice." — Amazon
My mom and grandmother both love this formula because it’s almost impossible to overdo. The tint goes on light at first, so you can slowly build the color without ending up with one harsh streak across your cheeks. The sponge applicator also makes the application way less messy than traditional liquid stains. It contains hyaluronic acid, too, which helps keep the finish looking fresh and hydrated.
Shades: 6
What I Love: Mature-skin friendly; Contains hydrating MVP; Doesn't disrupt makeup underneath
What I Don't: Definitely the lightest tint on the list
Customer Review: "This Serum Blush Cheek Tint is so easy to use and blend. Dab a little directly on your cheek, blend with the brush, and you’ll get a beautiful, natural-looking glow. For someone who wants more pigmented and flushed-looking cheeks, this cheek tint is also buildable." — Sephora
Senior Beauty Editor Samantha Holender introduced me to this blush, and now I fully understand the obsession. The gel-cream texture gives cheeks that fresh, healthy-looking glow that’s somehow noticeable without looking obvious. I also love that the shades lean natural—soft peaches, pinks, and terracottas that work beautifully across skin tones. Even though it’s sheer, it builds surprisingly well.
Shades: 6
What I Love: Gorgeous texture that dries down to a tint; Can be used across skin types and ages; Clean beauty product
What I Don't: Can crease when used on the lids, which it is also intended to be used for
Customer Review: "I will never use powder blush again! The Gel-Cream Blush goes on so well and never goes on thick. Just a natural 'blush' to your cheeks. Can't wait to try something else from Chantecaille. I love your product. You have a winner here. Oh, the best part, it stays on all day, and you can even use this without any makeup and looks like you just have a hint of the sun." — Nordstrom
While technically more of a balm stick than a true tint, the finish gives the exact same watercolor effect people love from blush stains. I first noticed it after makeup artist David Razzano used it during one of our beauty shoots, and the glow was unreal in person. Holm also recommends it for its “buildable” formula and “skin-true finish.” The result is glossy, glassy skin—a dream.
Shades: 11
What I Love: Creates a gorgeous glass glow; Layers great with makeup; Extensive shade range
What I Don't: It may have to be reapplied once throughout the day
Customer Review: "I love these balm sticks. I can apply it under or over a set face. Not a glittery formula at all, but rather the perfect amount of glassy formula that becomes one with the skin. I’m obsessed, and I own way too many blushes." — Sephora
What Is the Best Way to Apply a Blush Stain?
The one thing to know about blush stains is that they dry fast—sometimes really fast. According to Holm, the key is to work in thin layers and blend immediately after applying. “I like to use my fingers for the initial placement, tapping the product high on the cheekbone, then blending out and up toward the hairline,” she says. “Use the outer corner of your eye as your guide for where to start.”
Personally, I’ve found blush stains look best when you don’t overthink them too much. A few dots, quick blending, and slightly imperfect placement honestly tend to make the finish look even prettier. Holm also recommends building slowly rather than applying too much product upfront since stains are harder to diffuse once they’ve fully set. “You can always add more, but a stain is harder to walk back once it’s set,” she explains.
Why Is the Softer, Lived-In Look Trending Right Now?
After years of ultra-defined makeup trends, there’s been a pretty noticeable shift toward makeup that feels softer, fresher, and a little less “perfect.” Instead of heavy contour, overly matte finishes, or blush placement that inches higher and higher up every week, people seem way more interested in makeup that still lets skin look like skin.
“I think people are craving something that looks like them, just better,” says Holm. “We went through a moment of bold, pigmented powder blushes—which are fun—but I think there’s a collective softness happening right now. People want skin that looks healthy and alive, not done.”
Honestly, that tracks with pretty much every beauty trend taking over right now. Between watercolor makeup, glossy skin finishes, blurred lips, and sheer washes of color replacing heavier glam, makeup feels less focused on sleek and sculpted and more focused on enhancing what’s already there. And because blush stains melt into the skin instead of masking it, they fit perfectly into that whole skin-first approach.
