Here's something you should know about me: I wear nail enhancements all the time. In fact, when I look back on my nail journey, I realize that I've spent over a decade exclusively wearing either gel nail polish, gel extensions, builder gel, or acrylic on my nails when I get them professionally done. That's not necessarily a bad thing (there's nothing wrong with wanting to wear polish that won't chip or nails that are a bit more durable), but I'll admit that it's done a number on my nails to the point that any time I take a break from the enhancements, I notice that my own nails are left feeling soft, weak, and brittle.
Because of this, I'm leaning into taking better care of my nails in between manicures. That means investing in strengthening nail products while also being a little more gentle on them and making sure I keep my cuticles healthy and moisturized. To see what I mean, keep reading for my strengthening nail routine.
These products work wonders for my weakened nails.
Gentle Removal
The first step here is making sure that you're not using anything that's too harsh or rough on your nails when you remove the enhancements. These products get the job done without drying out your nails or irritating the skin.
The worst part of any nail appointment (for me, at least) is having to stick my fingers in irritating acetone in order to remove my gels. What makes this product convenient is that it's acetone-free, removing the polish without drying out my nails in the process.
Another thing that grinds my gears about removing my gels with acetone is having to deal with the strong scent. This polish-removing product from Nails Inc. is also acetone-free, but it also has a coconut scent that's not too chemical-heavy.
Damage Control
Any time I've returned to my bare nails after a few months covering them up with gel, I'm usually left dealing with nails that are really soft and fragile, making it nearly impossible for them to continue growing without breaking. These strengthening products make them much more durable.
You've heard of bond building shampoos and conditioners that can nurse damaged or color-treated hair back to health, but did you know that the same technology can be used on your nails? Just two coats of this OPI serum will have your nails looking and feeling stronger in less than a week.
This formula from Essie focuses on strengthening the nails, but it also has a purple tint in order to neutralize discoloration in nails that appear yellow. It's like a purple conditioner for your nails.
Keratin treatments aren't only for your hair. Use this strengthener daily to address cracked, peeling nails.
These days, gel services reign surpreme, which is why this formula from Essie specially focuses on addressing damaged caused by frequently wearing gel polish and extensions. It's filled with keratin and ceramides meant to fill in the areas of the nails that are peeling while also thickening the nail overall.
Cuticle Oils
Don't neglect your cuticles, as they can typically become dry and cracked without proper care. Use these oils in between manicures for more moisture.
This oil formula from Sally Hansen includes vitamin E, a known emollient that treats severe dryness while also strengthening the skin barrier. Rub a few drops of this on your fingers before or after getting a manicure.
Balm Dot Com
The solution to your nails woes doesn't just lie in cuticle oils. These thick balms will also bring some life (and moisture) back to your nail beds.
In the same way you can apply an overnight foot mask to heavily moisturize your feet while you sleep, you can get a little more specific and do the exact same thing for your nails and cuticles. OPI's product features thick shea butter as well as jojoba oil that gently add moisture back to extremely dry cuticles.
