Emma Chamberlain Just Kicked Off Sweater Season With J.Crew's New Rollneck

It's beginning to look a lot like J.Crew Rollneck Sweater season. While fashion girls prepared to pull the circa-1988 hero item out of fall storage, the American brand did them one better: On August 24, J.Crew teamed up with Emma Chamberlain to introduce the new Tiny Rollneck, just in time for the return of sweater weather.

Following its more relaxed revamp in Sept. 2025 (which earned endorsements from the entire Marie Claire team), the best-selling style has had a wildly successful year. In February, five New York-based designers—including Collina Strada, Eckhaus Latta, and Tanner Fletcher—reworked the Rollneck during New York Fashion Week. One month later, the sweater secured a cameo on Sarah Pidgeon's Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in Love Story.

Now, the fall fixture is back—in its most miniature form.

The cotton sweater, known for its oversized slouch, has transformed into a cropped quarter-zip. According to the press release, the sweater's most iconic design details (think: the tubular collar and ribbed cuffs) got the "shrunken, fitted, and slightly cropped" baby tee treatment. While historically, the Rollneck drooped long and loose, the new style features a waist-hugging hem and three inches of vertical ribbing.

The Tiny Rollneck's biggest silhouette shift is, by far, the partial zipper. In its almost forty-year history, J.Crew never knit zippers into the It sweater's namesake neckline. But while the silver hardware marks the most modern twist on the style, it doesn't disrupt the signature curve of the collar.

"The silhouette brings a more youthful, playful, and pushed energy to the original through bright, graphic color and a mix of prep, sport, and irreverence," the label said in the press release.

For the campaign shot and directed by Ian Markell, the 25-year-old (dressed by her stylist, Jared Ellner) modeled the eight new '90s-inspired colors: peony pink, creamy Bessette-Kennedy-coded white, and multiple takes on Fall 2026's stripe trend.

According to Chamberlain's interview with The Cut, the former Marie Claire cover star has a soft spot for navy and white shades: "Those two sweaters give me a Maine summer feel," she told the publication. "Either of them with some classic denim and a cute little random flip-flop—that, to me, is a gorgeous, casual, and beachy New England summer vibe."

If J.Crew's goal was to secure the Tiny Rollneck (and its campaign) a spot on Gen Z moodboards and wishlists, casting Chamberlain all but signed, sealed, and delivered its success. Chamberlain has previously influenced her devoted under-30 disciples by partnering up with brands like Levi's, Stuart Weitzman, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, and more.

As showcased by Chamberlain's jeans-and-flip-flop pairing, J.Crew's cropped Rollneck was made for summer-to-fall transition styling. And since every shade just dropped on August 26, J.Crew collectors don't have to wait to kickstart Tiny Rollneck Fall.
