The Necktie Trend Is Dominating New York Fashion Week Street Style

Each New York Fashion Week circuit brings an accessory trend that takes over street style faster than you can say "Fall 2026." Last September, ‘90s-inspired cord necklaces had the fashion set in a chokehold. And the season before that, It girls carried purses plastered in whimsical bag charms.

This time around, it appears as though the decoration du jour is none other than the humble necktie.

Heavily associated with menswear, and typically worn alongside collared button-downs and suits, neckties convey a strong message of formality. But by mid-way through the second day of NYFW’s Fall 2026 season, attendees affirmed the classic piece of cloth can be worn beyond corporate settings and cocktail events.

Outside Coach’s latest show, stylist June Ambrose gave her striped necktie a sporty spin with a windbreaker and an embellished tulle skirt. Meanwhile, another attendee decided to take a Western-inspired approach, styling a plaid alternative with a cognac-colored suede jacket, a matching pencil skirt, and slouchy cowboy boots.

If I had to guess, I’d say these fashionable trendsetters took notes from Saint Laurent, Thom Browne, and Valentino—designers that are known for incorporating ties in their collections. Or perhaps they were inspired by power dressers of the ‘80s and ‘90s, who paired their neckties with padded blazers and pumps. Either way, you'll want to add these subversive necktie looks to your outfit rotation. It's not all work and no play when you can mix wardrobe staples you likely already own—including overcoats, straight-leg jeans, and loafers—with this fashion week-approved accessory.

Burgundy is one of fashion’s highest-ranking color trends, and it’s not poised to lose its prime position anytime soon. Marie Claire's deputy director of social media, Christina Dambrosio, demonstrates how to wear the rich shade with ease. For the base, you’ll need a button-down, a crisp blazer, and tailored trousers. Complete the ensemble with a sophisticated shoulder bag and a pair of kitten-heeled boots, and you’ve got yourself a timeless uniform that you can wear on repeat.

There’s something about a matching set that feels instantly put-together. The show-goer pictured above gave a not-so-subtle nod to Western-inspired fashion by pairing a suede skirt suit with the two-toned cowboy boots. She elevated the look with charming touches—like a tie tucked into a sweater vest and a bucket bag draped in scintillating hardware.

For those of you who don’t know, sportif style has become a major trend of 2026. It’s an aesthetic that blends athleisure essentials with chic separates—two opposing categories that somehow work perfectly together. Stylist June Ambrose proves so, seamlessly teaming a windbreaker and a tulle skirt shimmering with paillettes. Her necktie, neatly fastened around a crisp shirt, elevates the look to a whole new level.

Here in New York, temperatures have been hovering around 20 degrees for the past few weeks. As such, stylish city residents are keeping warm in hefty layers, like textured teddy coats. Follow suit if you’re battling bone-chilling weather.

Last year, I forecasted that rugby shirts would spike in popularity. Nearly 12 months later, I’m thrilled to confirm my prediction was on point. The preppy top has become a coveted item, and I just so happen to have a thorough assortment of my own. In terms of styling, I’ll be copying this exact look.
