Beaded Jewelry Is Back—But It’s Not as Sweet as You Remember

Designers are reworking the nostalgic accessory with a more grown-up point of view.

When I was younger, I had a wind-up musical box where I kept all my treasured gems. Decorated with a ballerina figurine that twirled to the tune of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” the case held a variety of pieces, from charm bracelets to cord necklaces. But what took up the most space was my assortment of beaded jewelry—from bulky, bohemian wooden beads to tiny gemstones coated in rainbow hues.

I’ve always associated beads with girlhood nostalgia, but the Spring 2026 runways have encouraged me to rethink that assumption. Designers reimagined the crafty, DIY-inspired accessory trend in a way that felt playful, yet undeniably polished.

At Celine, layers of colorful candy necklaces added a whimsical touch to crisp button-downs, tailored blazers, and skin-tight trousers. The Parisian brand’s creative director, Michael Rider, also showcased beaded drop earrings, strung on a thick leather cord. Meanwhile, Matthieu Blazy of Chanel unveiled glossy, globe-like baubles resembling miniature planets. Blazy elevated the celestial accessories with a sheer plaid skirt suit and high-vamp heels. Elsewhere, Henry Zankov incorporated jumbo beads and seashell jewelry into his collection, styling them alongside tankinis and breezy cardigans for a chic, beach-ready feel.

Beyond beaded jewelry, labels have been leaning into plenty of other youthful styles that also evoke childhood—including PVC jelly sandals, animal-shaped bag charms, and even babydoll dresses. I’d argue that perhaps this wave of nostalgia is a direct response to the gloomy state of the world. In moments of uncertainty, it can feel comforting to embrace quirky designs that offer a welcome sense of joy and innocence.
