Selena Gomez did an Instagram revamp yesterday, which included changing her bio, profile pic, and unfollowing hundreds of accounts—including her assistant Theresa Mingus's (opens in new tab), several of her close friends' who she's been seen out or on vacation with (opens in new tab), Gigi Hadid's (opens in new tab), and Demi Lovato's (opens in new tab) among others.
She still follows several Selena Gomez fan accounts, Taylor Swift, Amy Schumer, Jessica Alba, her stylist Kate Young, and her best friend (and kidney donor) Francia Raisa.
'Selena Gomez, still following Taylor Swift's account.'
Fans noticed the activity—and Gomez's follow list shrink from 316 to just 37—yesterday afternoon. Gomez has given no indication why she reduced her following list, and it isn't likely the unfollows mean there's any drama in those relationships. For example, yesterday Gomez commented on Lovato's recent Instagram, and Lovato liked Gomez's latest post:
Gomez has also said that she doesn't have the password to her own Instagram account and that her assistant will post there for her—meaning the unfollows may have not been done by Gomez herself and part of an overall brand strategy instead of personal. "As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out," Gomez said during an interview last year. (opens in new tab) "It had become so consuming to me. It's what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn't want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn't want to care about. I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I'm kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit."
Gomez did add a heartfelt post to her account last night though, closing the day with a little retrospection. "The home I grew up in, from birth to 13... (no one was home when I knocked this time lol)," she wrote. "I visit this place every chance I get. In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you. ❤️"
