Ken Downing and Joanna Coles
So, it is the end of the first day of fashion week. I have no idea who I am anymore but I think I am Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire. And I know I'm joined by Ken Downing the fabulous, heavenly, fashion director of Neiman Marcus. Ken, tell me about your experience on project runway all stars.
Well I mean you were there as well. How fantastic of a time that we have.
So much and you were brilliant, brilliant judge because you know what women customers want.
You know I spend a lot of time with my customers. But I'm also when I'm not in the front row I'm all for America doing events for my customers and meeting my customers face to face. So I'm always looking for things that are beautiful. I'm always looking for something that's going to flatter a woman and certainly celebrate her femininity.
When you're looking as a judge on all stars, you know what these designers can do. How are you taking what you know about the customer and applying it in the judges row?
Well the reality is every woman is interested in the dreams as the runway. But she wants clothes that will go from the dream at the runway into the reality of her wardrobe. Effortless shake is my mantra.
So one of my favorite lines that I have to say all the time when I was a mentor in project runway was, what do you select from the Neiman Marcus accessories were? What accessories should we be picking for spring line?
She has to get a silver shoe, she's going to wear that silver shoe then tonight for a lot of great silver shoes plus a silver hill. You have to have an amazing clutch. If you remember the runway, it was hardly a double handled handbag that was from the fall season moving forward. But it is about a clutch, please get some big earings. I do think colorful stones and custom silver is a really fun way to do it.
I want to know, I mean it's nice to be sitting next because you have got to tell me exactly what I should be buying for spring. So I haven't committed my spring budget yet. What are the key pieces I want for spring?
I don't think you can start any conversation about fashion, about spring. But I'm gonna tell you about color. I mean color was everywhere. I'm loving pink, I think that pink that we saw on the runway from the shocking, those bold hot pinks. The pale-pale pedal pinks are absolutely the first place to land. And I have to tell you, in yellow seen a neutral,
you have to think of yellow like you would beige or camel.
So let's talk about prints. We have lots of prints in our March issue. How do you make prints?
Well one, you have to be bold. And I truly believe go bigger, go home when it comes to a friend. It's not a season for a wall flower. So our eyes is very accustomed to this idea of prints together, or mixing print.
And sort of kiosk with prints which somehow become beautiful.
Kiosk is a perfect word in the right sort of way. And I think that real look down if you something organic, like a floral. It's nice to bring back something to a matrix. So a great striped shirt, lots of floral skirt is super adorable. Or even if it's just a white shirt with a floral skirt, bring it in-in a shoe or bring it in-into a handbag.
Okay. I'm ready to just go shopping. I'm going right now. I'm getting my wallet [unknown] bring pink wallet, I think Ken would approve.
I love it, I love your wallet. Love you.
