Movie Reviews: What To Watch

Be Kind Rewind
When two of our favorite guilty pleasures, Mos Def and Jack Black, team up with winsomely trippy Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), hilarity is inevitable. Black and Def accidentally erase the tapes at a local video store, and their low-tech, loopy, 20-minute remakes of blockbusters, from Driving Miss Daisy to Rocky to Rush Hour 2, are rapturously full of Black's off-key sound tracks and balls-out impressions—his Jackie Chan alone is worth the $10.50.

Taxi to the Dark Side
This squirm-inducing doc revisits Afghanistan's notorious Bagram prison and the case of an innocent 22-year-old Afghan cabdriver who died after five days of "interrogation" by U.S. soldiers. With gruesome photos of physical torture interspersed with interviews from former detainees and ex-soldiers, this necessary film is decidedly not a date movie—unless you're stepping out with Donald Rumsfeld.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
A French movie centered on a completely paralyzed man sounds like a rough ride, but director Julian Schnabel makes it Oscar-worthy. Based on the memoir of magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffered a stroke that left him with the use of only one eyelid, the real action explores his borderless imagination—think crashing icebergs and soaring acrobats—in this sumptuous new classic.
