I Refuse to Do Touchups—But These 10 Long-Lasting Lip Products Stay Put From Day to Night
No fading, no smudging.
While I can appreciate it from afar, I've never loved a bold lip—at least on me. I just find the juice isn't worth the squeeze. It emphasizes my insecurities (a thin upper lip and an uneven lower one) and requires a level of upkeep I simply cannot be bothered to provide. To me, a great lip moment emphasizes my natural color and allows me to subtly reshape them with lip liner to my liking. Most importantly, I want all-day coverage with a long-lasting lip product without the burden of constant reapplication or fear of smudges. It's quite the tall order.
But with access to virtually all beauty has to offer, I've managed to find the ultimate routine for a low-maintenance lip—and yes, it's a routine, because no single product can do all that, all day. It takes all of five minutes (if that!), and leaves me with perfect, nearly impenetrable your-lips-but-better. My full low-maintenance lip routine, below.
Lip Stains for Longevity
Lip stains are my first line of defense when it comes to the art of the long-wear lip. Stains are generally the longest-lasting options when it comes to lip color—which makes it perfect for all-day wear. Once dry, they create a base I know won’t smudge, smear, or fade throughout the day.
An old faithful, I always come back to Benefit’s Benetint in the original rose-tinted hue. It amps up my natural lips with a just-bitten burst of color. The formula is ultra-thin, making application effortlessly precise and customizable. A single coat offers a sheer tint that you can build up to your heart’s content. It somehow manages to be both long-lasting and non-drying, a difficult feat in the lip space. Pro tip: Gently pat the product into the lips for a Nina Park-esque blur, then use whatever’s left on your fingers on the cheeks.
Lip stains can be notoriously drying and mattifying—it’s an unfortunate trade-off to ensure longwear. And it’s exactly what makes these Lip Nectars so impressive. Violette_FR delivers the longevity of a lip stain, the comfort of a balm, and the high-shine finish of a gloss in one step. There’s not much more you could ask from a single product. Every single shade is surprisingly wearable and gloriously buildable, while the signature formula leaves lips feeling nourished and hydrated.
Try a Lip Tint for a Subtler Approach
For a more natural lip, I’ll opt for a lip tint. It offers sheer, buildable, and soft layers of color with a glossy, dewy finish perfect for everyday wear. Lip tints are particularly adept at imparting a natural, glowy flush of color with impressive longevity given the cushion-y formulas.
K-beauty is notoriously lightyears ahead of us here in the States, so it’s no surprise Korea-based Rom &nd has an entire suite of lip tinting and staining options. With a slightly tackier formula that leaves a glass-like shine, the Juicy Lasting Lip Tint sits comfortably on the lips, delivering a subtle pop of color that deepens over time. I’ve been loyal to the #19 almond rose shade, but plan to stock up on the range next time I’m in store.
For a soft hydrating tint that’s as glowy on the lips as it is on the cheeks, I turn to Caliray’s criminally underrated SoCal Superbloom Tints. The formula is equal parts skin-care and makeup magic, with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane, as well as a three-step stain-mixing technology that delivers a transfer-proof hint of color. The result is a cushion-y, silky smooth feel that actually lasts throughout the day. Plus, the oversized doe-foot applicator makes on-the-go touchups a breeze.
Lip Oil-Stain Hybrids That Give Glow
Somewhere between lip stains and lip tints sits a new class of products, brought to us straight from Korea (of course): the lip oil-stain hybrid. With ultra-lightweight formulas and non-sticky dry-downs, lip oil stains deliver the most comfortable hint of color while providing fairly long-lasting wear.
Danielle Hardman wears Rare's Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil.
This innovative gel-to-oil formula starts glossy, giving way to a comfortable wash of color on the lips. It’s endlessly layerable with a smooth, glassy finish. Rare Beauty’s oil stains leave lips hydrated and nourished while imparting a hint of color that lasts for hours on end. The subtle tint makes the colors feel approachable, though you can easily increase the saturation for a stronger pop.
Ideal for crusty wintertime lips, Kulfi’s Lassi Lip Staining Oils have a moisturizing glossy slip that deeply hydrates lips even after the dry down. Colors buff out to create a sheer veil or can be layered on for a bold statement. With mango seed oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E, the oil-stain feels equal parts skincare and makeup, as it cocoons lips in a soft embrace.
Liners That Don’t Budge
Lip liners are an essential step in my low-maintenance lip lifestyle—they enhance my tragically thin upper lip, act as a barrier to prevent product from bleeding or feathering into fine lines, and help boost the longevity of my other lip products. In my humble opinion, the best lip liners last through a few glasses of wine, or even a full meal.
Make Up For Ever’s iconic Artist Color Pencils already had impressive longevity, so the Extreme formula had all the more to live up to. Luckily, they did just that, and more. The intensely pigmented pencil comes in all your favorite colors (Endless Cacao, Anywhere Caffeine, Wherever Walnut) that last for as long as you need, with a velvet-y matte finish that blends like a dream.
Yes, these are technically a lip contour, but the colors lend themselves to lining particularly well. You’re not going to find a lip liner that lasts longer than one in a pen format, and this one fits the bill. It offers smudge-proof, transfer-proof, even kiss-proof (okay, a peck not a makeout) staying power that blends upon application but stays once set.
Lipsticks With Lasting Power
Lipstick can feel like a big commitment—keeping the color perfect requires multiple touchups and a keen eye. Instead of using lipstick to really bring the color, I think of it as the final layer in a great long-wear lip. In a shade similar to my tint and liner, I lightly pat on the lipstick to set everything for the day.
When it comes to lipstick, I usually shy away from any mattifying formulas; they have a habit of sucking up the moisture and leaving lips dry. This one from Charlotte Tilbury is the exception to the rule. It features antioxidants, vitamin E, and a blend of waxes to help condition and protect lips from dryness. It's all the benefits of a long-wear lipstick with zero downside.
A satin lipstick with a subtle luminous finish, this lipstick does the job of both a lipstick and gloss in a couple of swipes. It's the perfect final step when my lips are feeling particularly dry, thanks to its ultra-creamy formula and cushion-soft effect.
