Burke Ramsey filed a $750 million defamation lawsuit against CBS on Wednesday in response to the network's two-part special about the death of his sister JonBenét Ramsey, which suggested he was guilty of her murder.
The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey, which aired in September, featured a team of investigators reexamining evidence from the unsolved murder, before coming to the conclusion that Burke—who was 9 years old at the time—committed the horrific crime, and that his parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, helped cover it up. According to court documents, Burke is pressing charges to "redress the permanent damage to his reputation resulting from defendants' false accusation that he killed his sister, JonBenét Ramsey."
As previously reported, both Burke and his parents were cleared of all suspicion in the crime in 2008, due to DNA evidence found on JonBenét's leggings and underwear, which did not match anyone in her family. However, this has not stopped many from speculating and believing that the Ramsey family was still somehow behind the murder, despite their repeatedly claiming otherwise.
According to the Associated Press, Burke's lawsuit against CBS claims they conducted a "sham investigation" that followed a "preconceived story line" about JonBenét's murder.
"The accusation that Burke Ramsey killed his sister was based on a compilation of lies, half-truths, manufactured information, and the intentional omission and avoidance of truthful information about the murder of JonBenét Ramsey," the lawsuit reads.
This will be the second lawsuit Burke has filed in response to the CBS special. In October, he filed a $150 million defamation suit against one of the show's lead investigators, forensic pathologist Dr. Werner Spitz, for "explicitly and falsely stat[ing] that [he] killed his sister." Along with monetary damages, the lawsuit also sought for Spitz to "remove and retract all defamatory statements" made about Burke and his family.
