Miley Cyrus's new single "Malibu" is so sweet. As she previously revealed, the song is about longtime love Liam Hemsworth and the lyrics truly back up that statement. "Malibu" traces Miley and Liam's roller coaster of a relationship, from when they first got together to their breakup and reunion. The song pays tribute to the couple's connection to Malibu the place—for starters, it's where they live and where Liam surfs.
She starts the song with a shoutout to Liam, thanking him for introducing her to the beach in the first place:
I never came to the beach and stood by the ocean/I never sat by the shore under the sun with my feet in the sand/But you brought me here/And I'm happy that you did/'Cause now I'm as free as birds catching the wind
She notes that it took some time for her to come to terms with her fears:
I always thought I would sink so I never swam/I never went boatin', don't get how they are floatin'/And sometimes I get so scared of what I can't understand
But guess what? Thanks to Liam, those fears are gone, and everything is so much more clear in her life:
But here I am/Next to you/The sky is more blue/In Malibu/Next to you/In Malibu/Next to you
Staying on topic, Miley then sings about a nice image of them together on the beach, which really makes one think of those images of Miley and Liam together on the beach in Costa Rica in 2013, months before they announced their split. Excuse me while I cry for 10 minutes:
We watched the sun go down as we're walking/I'd spend the rest of my life just standing here talkin'/You explain the current as I just smile/Hoping you'll stay the same and nothing will change/And it'll be us, just for once/Will they even exist/That's when I wish to swim away with the fish
Here, Miley directly addresses their breakup, which was inevitable at the time, according to her Billboard interview, because she was going through a major life change.
Is it supposed to be this hot all summer long/I never would have believed you if three years ago you told me /I'd be here writing this song/But here I am/Next to you/The sky so blue/In Malibu
She thanks Liam again, for saving her from a time when she thought she was drowning. In the words of Miley, this song, and this relationship, is a "dream come true."
We are just like the waves that flow back and forth/Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning and you're there to save me and I want to thank you with all of my heart/It's a brand new start/A dream come true/In Malibu
